I can see why it's all crust and whatnot. But the bread isn't sliced that way.
Besides, I think having a separate name for the end portions makes it easier to understand. If someone told me they didn't like their sandwich to have crust, then I'd peel off the outsides. But if they told me they didn't like the ends or the heels, then I'd tell them to get a new loaf of bread.
