A sad story. Sadder still is, there is no mention of any hate crime here.

"Afterward, the pair went home, apparently so proud of what they had done they bragged to witnesses, saying they had robbed and "hurt" a "white boy," according to the court records."

I suppose any harsher treatment for this act because they were black  and they killed a "white boy"would be racist huh?



Another sad story, yet this one is "hate crime" emphasized, when the murderer does not come out make any racial claims.

baltimore fucking sucks, I'm embarrassed that of the few independent cities in the US that aren't in Virginia, one of them is Baltimore. The knuckledraggers who commit all these crimes bring the name of Maryland down.

Anyway it's a bit supportive of the saying "no good deed goes unpunished." Betcha the murderers are on food stamps and welfare and spend it on drugs and alcohol, while their victim was actually a contributing member of society trying to better the world. Thank god we still have the death penalty in Maryland.

of course, being the still-sometimes-shitty state we are, they'll probably get 20 years or some weak sentence like that. I wish the state legislature would nut up and start actually punishing violent criminals.

The real hate crime is being committed by the City of Baltimore and the state of Maryland against their own residents:

Lavelva Merritt, 24, and John Alexander Wagner, 34, charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Stephen Pitcairn, have lengthy criminal histories and have been passing through the region's justice system for years, seemingly without repercussion.


•Wagner pleaded guilty to a vicious assault on his then-girlfriend in 2008 and received eight years in prison, but the entire sentence was suspended. He was charged with violating his probation on four occasions, but each time a city judge ordered that the terms of his supervision remain unchanged.


•In April, Wagner was caught on city surveillance cameras robbing a man at a downtown gas station and was arrested at the scene after the victim gave a detailed account and identified his attacker. But the victim later got skittish and refused to cooperate. Prosecutors dropped the case.
Obviously the city hates its people because it doesn't do shit to protect them, and the state hates them as well because it continues to allow this asshattery inside its one big city.

All countries restrict freedom of speech to a point.  Granted, hate speech is very different from hate crimes.

You can speak your mind no matter how hateful it is as long as it isn't inciting a riot or threatening to harm someone.

Hate crimes are a bit different, because they attribute extra penalties to crimes specifically because things like racism are involved.  I would argue this is unnecessary, because all murder that isn't in self-defense, defense of others, or part of war is equally criminal.

The only things that should matter are whether the murder was by accident, premeditated, or a crime of passion -- all of which are of course covered by laws outside of hate crime legislation.   A premeditated killing that is based off of racism is no worse than a premeditated murder based off of jealousy.

Uh...   so supporting a poll tax isn't cynical....?

Anyway, if you need proof of the power of lobbyism, just take a stroll down K Street.

You're so worried about the poor having too much power, yet the poor are among the least reliable of voting blocs.  One of the only groups less active in voting is college kids.

Your argument might work with the elderly continually pushing for more funding for SS or Medicare, but that's not just the poor pushing an agenda there.

The majority of pork in government goes to corporate interests -- that's where most of the power is, like with Wall Street.  The bailouts should be rather obvious evidence that big business has a much greater effect on our government than the poor.
