New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday of a heart attack at his Tampa home. In his decades running one of the world's most renowned teams (his Bronx Bombers notched seven World Series pennants since his 1973 purchase of the club), Steinbrenner, 80 years old at his death, transcended sports to become a pop culture icon.

FanHouse writes: "Not long into his ownership, a New York tabloid coined the nickname 'The Boss,' and it not only stuck, but Steinbrenner liked it."

this bastard killed a dynasty - the 70's A's. when he bought signed Catfish Hunter, yeah - ruined every small market team in every sport since.
the A's, Reds and Dodgers of the 70's were the last teams to build through their farm system. if you don't think free agency ruined other sports, look at the miami heat of today. or the lakers . . .

I get my Yankees support from my brother mostly, my Jets support from my Mom and brother (my mom actually dated Jabar Gaffney's dad...), and my Islanders support from when my dad bought season tickets in '01.
