Let's face it, like the c-47, AU-23, douglas DC something and the AC-119, the AC-130 won't last forever as a gunship. When it becomes time to replace it, which aircraft will become the next gunship? I originally thought C-5's or C-17's might be nice, but then Irealized how stupid that thought was because they have jet engines. I think, although they are enormous, the B-52's may be brought back as mounts for heavy artillery, because gunships are usually cargo or large aircraft due to their heavy loads. What do you think will become the next gunship? Or, do you think, like the AU-23 Peacemaker, a new aircraft will be specifically designed as a gunship?

A low speed, high loiter time, cargo aircraft, ruggedized for short/improvised runways, capable of relatively tight turning radius, loaded to the gills with weapons, ammo, and fire control systems.

Sounds like a turbo-prop driven, medium lift capacity, fixed wing aircraft.

Sounds like a C-130 to me.

Plenty of life left in that simple, rugged design.

Upgrade the engines, the fire control, the weapons as time and technology dictate.
Perhaps more efficient propellers designed with better technology airfoils (C-130J ?)
Perhaps redesign the wing with better airfoils, built with carbon/kevlar/epoxy and the complex curvature that material allows.

A CH-47 gunship would be rather cool, but it doesn't have the payload or endurance of a C-130.

Having the endurance to stay overhead all night, with heavy firepower, accurately placed..  pure genius.
Much better than having a rotating shift of jets coming and going, with imprecise weaponry, and constantly having to talk them through the current tactical scenario as they rotate in and out.

I can see something along the lines of a VERY updated C-130.
Take the Herc's layout, update everything. From the frame out to the skin.
Ya, I know, that should be the J model.

I like your reasoning. Yeah, the C-130 is so suited for the role, maybe an AC-130J is iminent. Maybe even an extended model, with more guns and computers.

Who cares? Seriously, don't fix it if it ain't broke. Not to mention when they do finally start to fall apart that's why we have this think called maintenance, and after that when time takes it's toll and our enemies have something superior, we will already have something two steps ahead we can't even currently predict.

So you're saying wait until the planes can't fly before we start to ponder what the replacement will be?

Well the thing is, we may have essentially reached the plateau. At this point, like someone else said, all we really have to worry about are avionics, weaponry and the turboprop engines.

We're saying this trash doesn't belong in DST because it is neither debate nor serious talk. Who gives a flying fuck about the AC-130s replacement? Has it even been used since Vietnam?

Probably more UCAVs...or an updated Herc, maybe they'll completely refresh the airframe etc..  C5s are fucking huge next to hercs, would make a bigger target.

I wonder how far away electric prop engines are.  Less of a heat signature would help avoid AA.
