Sure I did. Army veteran currently finishing up my degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in International Transportation and Trade (business). Will be done in December.
Ohh so Student. Can't wait till you get in the real world, I'm sure you do great(that's actually not scarcasm).

Wait like an electrican?
No, like the guys who do the planning for electrical networks, both transmission side and end user side. We're the guys who keep the grid going so you can have air conditioning in the summer and food on your table.

Electricians are the front line grunts.

Ohh you will be doing really good then. We're fucked in that department and we're going to need a complete overhaul soon.

I hope to god we start building new Nuclear power plants, fuck those unintellegent "green" movement people. Nuclear power was greener then the shit we're using.

Well hopefully when you get out of school there will be jobs and funding for it. Because honestly the money in the private sector is drying up.

I was a pure business major until Obama was elected. Then I switched to EE to chase the green energy money I knew would be coming down the pipe.

Get an MBA after you finished your EE and you'll be golden.  I would hope you'll want to get a degree in something that you love to do and not a promise from the current administration for government programs that may or may not exist when you graduate.

Enjoy your time in college.

MBA or Masters in Economics is the plan. Haven't decided between the two and it will likely come down to a coin flip.

And no, I'm not strictly chasing government money. I wasn't really happy with how broad a business degree is and wanted something more focussed so I did my research and found EE to have the highest starting wages out of the degrees offered at my college. It also happens to be the most difficult degree offered which is a bonus as business wasn't challenging at all. I was so bored in my business classes that I was maintaining a 1.9 GPA and was on the verge of being on probation. Since I've switched to EE, I've maintained a 3.95 GPA.

If you love what you do, then it's no longer work.

I would advise that you find an intern position while you go to school related to your field.  Don't just get a burger flipping job or what not, that will actually hurt you when you finally look for a job as an Engineer.

Document 'side' or 'fun' projects that you do on your own (Sites like http://hackaday.com/ and http://makezine.com/ can expire you).  I'm not talking about a professional portfolio, but be able to recount stuff you did for fun or your interests - stories like this perk recruiters' ears and differentiates you from the straight A student who buried his head in book and knows all the formulas but doesn't know a Phillips from a standard screwdriver.

Attend the local chapter of IEEE in your area.  This may be a good way for you to find an intern position while going through school.

When I was in college I was making $40,000/year as a Junior working 35 hours/week and going to school full-time.  Needless to say I didn't have any need for student loans.

When you go to college is not just about what you learn is who you are paying to have access to.  Those contacts you gain in college will be used throughout your professional career more often than not especially the first decade right out of collage.

Good luck.

I interned last summer, and this summer. I've already been a project manager for a multi-million dollar account during my internship. As for the rest of my resume... I was in the signal corps in the army dealing with internet, phone and radio transmissions. I not only was an operator, but did field level maintenance and repair on the equipment as well. My secret security clearance is still active. In the civilian world I've done everything from waiting tables, bartending, I drove a launch at a yacht club for three summers, I worked in my uncles auto body shop, I've laid concrete, built my first computer at the age of ten and a whole bunch of other crap. I've also read close to a thousand books in my lifetime. So, I'm not your typical booksmart nerdy engineering student

Wait, what?  You aren't white?  But white enough?  My joke was regarding all the Asians and Indians who pretty much dominate the engineering scene these days.  But regardless, white boys still dominate the senior levels.

Albeit, most of the old fart engineers I know are Jewish and/or of nordic descent.

I'm Swedish/German descent. Brown hair, hazel eyes, 6'3" and built like a linebacker Like I said, I'm not typical for an engineering student (in my experience anyway).

Wait till you join a multi-billion dollar engineering firm.  Quite a few PM's who interact with VP's on a regular basis are exactly like you.  In other words, you'll have an easy time moving up the ranks.

The best thing I have learned so far is that my personality fits in well. I... lack tact. I'm blunt to the point that my girlfriend has to remind me to 'be nice' around her yenta friends.

There are millions of people unemployed, considerably more than there are job vacancies. You're always going to have unemployed people, even if all the jobs were filled. You're always going to be giving unemployed citizens welfare to live, because a Western 1st world nation that donates in excess of $12 billion a year in foreign aid can't be seen to have it's own citizens with nowhere to live or nothing to eat.

So just deal with it already. Your tax is squandered in far worse and larger ways, and if that doesn't bother you as much as welfare does then get a tax free job or move away.
How about spending $6 billion in our own fucking aid instead and still look spiffy and generous while gusting the other half into oblivion?

23 million to Kenya to fund abortions.
That money could have been used to pay quite a few unemployment checks.

"Republican congressmen on Wednesday accused the Obama administration of illegally funneling more than $23 million in taxpayer money toward a proposed Kenyan Constitution that has permissive language on abortion.

The funding of pro-constitution agencies in Kenya was discovered as a result of an audit by the inspector general of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Sending foreign assistance money to support legislation on abortion is illegal under the Siljander Amendment, which states that "no foreign assistance funds may be used to lobby for or against abortion." "

Here's a personal anecdote for ya:

So I'm sitting a the deli counter buying lunch for all my friends.  One of them I haven't seen in a while and he joins us.  He's been unemployed for a year.

Me: Where's that music coming from.
Unemployed guy: Oh that, its my new iPod.
Me: Your what?
<Unemployed guy>: Pulls out his new iPod and shows me the screen.
Me: Oh nice (feigning interest).
Unemployed guy: I got it a month ago.
Me: Really?  You finally got a job or something?
Unemployed guy: Nope.  I'm like my free time.

In the year since he's been fired he's gain ~50 lbs. too.

Now obviously this cannot be generalized for all the unemployed, but I certainly am curious what percentage of the unemployed are intentionally staying unemployed reaping the benefits.

I used to set up and perform the preliminary job interviews for my previous employer.  I hated it when I got a Michigan Works application because nine times out of ten I would have to leave multiple messages(policy to try 3 times to contact them) and either never hear back or have to sit through a grueling interview with someone who is pretty much trying to intentionally NOT be hired.

I laid off an office girl two years ago. She went from job to job. First it was, Can I store some stuff in your shop, then, Can I stay here for a while?

Two years later I had to close my location and move 16 miles away to get rid of her. She got a dog because she was lonely and soon my shop had mice and her dirty girls stuff everywhere. She always had the craigslist job window open but I never once saw her go for an interview in two years.

So ya, there are some lazy scabs out there. Then again, trying to find a job is like way tough right now.
