"a multitude of causes, unknown to former times are now acting with a combined force to blunt the discriminating powers of the mind... the most effective of these causes are the great national events which are daily taking place, and the increasing accumulation of men in cities, where the uniformity of their occupations produces a craving for the extraordinary incident, which the rapid communication of intelligence hourly gratifies".
wordsworth really knew his shit, eh. he was afraid of shit like that 200 years ago in 1800... you could pretty much use that paragraph to describe social decline with internet 'social networking' and email. in fact psychologists have diagnosed a personality-trait that goes alongside this: 'Continuous Partial Attention' (CPA). thinking about shit like that scares me.

I've seen tons of reasons and sound logic as to why AU Chats should be closed and they can use EE Chats like the rest of us.
I've yet to see a single remotely-decent reason as to why AU Chats should remain open.
I know people complain about moderation a lot, and how unfair, unbalanced, or confusing it is, but I had always brushed those allegations off as exaggerations. Up until now.
After extensive special treatment for a long period of time, one begins to feel entitled to that.

tbh every HBO drama is good... it's like the only good television production coming out of america. the only exception is, surprisingly, the pacific... which has turned out to be utter shite. the sopranos, six feet under, entourage etc. are all pretty good. the wire and mad men are both really fucking good. like, supremely good. like, as good as a television series can be.

Well yeah, it's premium cable. Networks aren't gonna waste their time and money trying to make something original and amazing when they could just make popular shit and draw in the masses and get more sponsors and better revenue from ad space.Uzique wrote:

I like Eureka. It's not that dark of a sci fi show and it's a nice change to for example Fringe, which I'm addicted to also. John Noble does an amazing job as Walter in Fringe
Wait, what? Isn't that done by BBC Wales?Miggle wrote:

Uh-oh. Missus came home. Gotta go do... things
it's done by the people that previously wrote for HBO... and for all purposes, you get my distinction. there's a 'HBO' type of drama-series and then there's the populist, droll and far-more popular shit that doesn't have half as much complexity, plurality or thought behind it. in reply to matty, i don't think the incentive to make these dramas 'worthy' (as in, worthy of the artistic title of a 'drama') is premium-cable money. i think the people that write these series genuinely do it to make some decent, critically-applaudable television. sort of like a diamond in the rough.ig wrote:

there's a saying going saying something like... the wire only pulled 100k viewers... but each one of them had a newspaper column. haha.
