In DST I see plenty of people calling public figures intelligent, smart or dumb, and stupid. After Spark posted about how the 95 year old scientist who predictes we will all be dead in a 100 years is smart I started to wonder how do you measure intelligence?

So without an IQ test how would you measure a persons intelligence? After that one astronaut went cross country in a diaper to kidnap I'm a little skeptical about any sort of intelligence measure since it seems that people who are otherwise considered to be smart, brilliant, etc. are capable of being highly irrational or doing something stupid.

So how do you measure a person's intelligence?

A person can be smart and nuts, which explains the astronaut.

It's all about presentation, demeanor, validity of points, how conclusions are reached, etc...  At least, this is how I gauge it on a webforum.

To me, intelligence is in part someone's ability to work things out for themselves. Simply cramming one's head full of knowledge doesn't make them intelligent, but it does make them smart. How you apply that information, to me, is intelligence.

You've got a pretty weird perception of genius if that's how you measure it.

A lot of people perceived to be 'intelligent' often lack in other areas such as social connection and emotional conflict resolution.  In my experience, smart people tend to excel at most things easier than others, while intelligent people often have to work harder to achieve, but still achieve in the end.

Ok this was really intellegent, if he didn't wear the diaper he'd have to pull over and wouldn't get to his destination as fast.

Intelligence is simply the ability to learn. The faster a person is able to grasp a concept, the more intelligence they possess.

As far as it being useful, well it depends on the drive of the individual. Some people use their talents and try to learn everything they can, and other sit mindlessly in front of a TV set for hours a day.

What you are really searching for Macbeth, is wisdom. Practical knowledge based on experience. It is not only more relevant, but infinitely more useful in a leader than pure intelligence.

I would say that intelligence is the abilty to explore and to learn. Being able to regurgitate nonsense that you read someone is way less valuable then being about to make up your own nonsense.

Yes some of the users here with God complexes may be rather intelligent, but what about their wisdom and real life skills.

This is exactly how i'd define intelligence. I'd also say that theres different types of intelligence, some people can take to most sports quicker than usual and some people are more academically intelligent.

edit: as for measuring it, i dont think that's possible. IQ tests are the most pointless self promoting things in the world, shortly followed by MENSA.

Ability to apply knowledge, as opposed to simply regurgitating it. Memory =/= intelligence.

I would lump those in with application of knowledge.

Depends what you mean by 'learn'.

Intelligence is variously speed of thought, application of knowledge, ability to adapt knowledge to new situations, ability to hold multiple pieces of information in the mind and apply them to the situation.
