Fenner, who is emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, said homo sapiens will not be able to survive the population explosion and “unbridled consumption,” and will become extinct, perhaps within a century, along with many other species. United Nations official figures from last year estimate the human population is 6.8 billion, and is predicted to pass seven billion next year..

Well maybe this is why things seem to be getting heated lately.

Where as I believe if we keep going the way we are going, that we won't be around for much longer I do believe that the man will actually correct it's self.

Basically the tension and the worry is going to cause a correction war, hopefully.

Ah yes... The wonders of foreseeing catastrophic events that will occur outside your own lifetime...

EDIT: But yeah we are becoming too many for this planet, we have been for some time actually..

EDIT2: Btw if all humans die, the rest of this planet dies along with them thanks to the amount of toxic and radioactive shit that will get out without man watching over his creations (powerplants, toxic dumps, chemical plants etc.)...

Of course one day humanity will experience a population reduction. Our current rate of growth and consumption can't continue forever, eventually there will come a time when we run out of non-renewable resources and/or our renewable ones can't keep up with demand. But so say that humankind will be entirely wiped out is highly unlikely. Even if nuclear/biological warfare was to occur, I find it hard to believe that it will kill EVERY person across EVERY continent around the world.

End humanity as we know it? Maybe. End it entirely? I can't see it happening.

Perhaps there will be Al Gore leading some massive Jim Jones type cool-aid party.
That'd be sweet.

I believe doomsdayers started the day people could communicate.

But he has a chart.

It's simple really, we have grown too big and we need a massive ground war to bring the world right.

Do you agree or dissagree.

We seem to do better today than 50 years ago. It's just we now know how shitty situations could be.

This might lengthen it.

Honeslty I think it's time for people to fix shit. The world is truely an awesome place and would probably fix it's self if we let it.

It is possible.

The Earth could suddenly turn itself inside out, seas could rise, a rock from space, solar storm, plague...

At least he's pushing his timeline out past his own lifetime. I don't think there has been a generation of Christians who haven't believed they saw signs of an impending apocalypse during their own lifespan. Of course, they've all been wrong, but it doesn't stop newer generations from springing up and seeing the same signs.

I'm no Bible thumper, but no one knows the day or the hour so it is rather pointless to speculate.

My comment wasn't a dig at Christians, just at the human tendency to seek confirmation for ones beliefs. Whether it be religious, scientific or whatever else, even if it means their own demise, they want to know that what they've preached is not false.

For example, this current oil spill has had anti-oil advocates coming out of the woodwork to say 'I told you so' even though the 'I told you so' means the destruction of the environment in the Gulf To people like this, being proved right is more important than the effort to clean up the mess. They feel vindicated.

As with all wild opinions of prognosticators, eventually one of them will be correct. He'll conveniently ignore the 1,000,000 times he was wrong in the past.

Your professor is wrong seeing as how we will all be killed in 2 years by 2012 anyway.  My god, your professor should have his credentials stripped for such obvious mistakes in his theory

Because power plants and chemical plants totally run without any human input whatsoever and the Earth totally won't be able to recover.

and no humans won't go extinct due to lack of resources. The population would drop but it'll eventually stabilize at a point.

I see.

The fact of the matter is, population growth is slowing down, and has stabilized is most modern nations, if not decreased. Developing nations are at most concern, and if there is some truth to worries over excessive population growth, they will suffer the most.

The book Population Bomb said, in the late 60's, that in the 70's and 80's there would be mass famine.
