I bought a Sony Ericsson w995 a few months ago. So right now my provider is Orange. When I move to the US in 10 days I would like to be able to keep my great phone and use a US provider, like maybe Vorizon for an example. Just not AT&T

A friend of mine told me I might have to "unlock" my phone to allow for foreign SIM cards to be functional in my phone.

Does anybody know if I need to do anything?

Needs Roaming and dual band or something I guess ?
The phone should be able to work the US sim card as it is quite a recent model.

Did you buy the phone with a contract or anything?

Yeah a year contract or something dumb along those lines, I don't know what the conditions are now. I think I have to bring the phone back, or maybe pay the full price if I want to keep it. I'd rather pay and keep it. I don't like switching phones.

It'll work fine for voice and messaging.

from the specs:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS/HSPA 900/2100

the carriers in the US may use different frequencies for 3G internet, so check up on that.

you won't be able to use it for Verizon or Sprint as they are not GSM carriers (verizon doesn't even use SIM cards)

What's the best cellphone provider in the US? That I can use my cellphone with.

All I need is calls and texts, I don't need any internet, even if my cellphone has 3G. Oh and overseas calls.

You might want to try Cricket if you can find it in your area, I've heard they have ridiculous plans where it's like 40$ a month for like unlimited text and phone and possibly data too, not quite sure.

I know for their USB 3G connectors, it's only like 20$ a month for unlimited data.

Better off selling the phone and signing a contract with Verizon.

Considering the poor quality of the GSM networks in the United States, Verizon or Sprint are really the only networks that you should be looking at.

Or I could keep my brand new epic phone, and sign a contract with vorizon.

AT&T or T-Mobile - both have GSM. As long as the bands match up with whatever you're going for...

But yeah, I'd go for a phone on Verizon. Sprint... maybe, depending on their connection where you're going.
