Introduction:
Super Smash Brothers for the N64 was a simple game. A very small handful of characters, about 14+ (Including NPC’s) compared to brawls whopping over 30 characters, NOT including NPC’s. However, it was the kind of game where you could invite over a couple of buddies who never played a game before, and they’d get the hang of it within minutes. Also, although some of the maps were cramped, or slightly too large, some of the maps were absolutely amazing.
Rating: E for everyone. Happily, though E video games aren’t like G movies in the respect that most of them are too censored to be good. Super Smash brothers had little blood, but the sound effects were perfect. Also, for an intended “throwaway” game, it did amazing. Think of it as a low budget movie that made millions. A “Twilight” of games.
Characters: In super smash brothers, the characters came in pairs, (The playable ones), for the most part. There were two Pokemon, the Mario bros., etc. The character design was, however, very very well done. For example, Samus was like the ranged “Heavy weapons” character. Donkey kong was the king of melee. Mario had killer agility and quick attacks, but God help you if you get within reach of Luigi’s flaming punch attack. Also, how the designers made the character’s move was quite good, they moved smoothly, even when jumping and turning. The movement, other than the double-jumping etc. Was realistic. It was a platform game.
Mario: Small, quick, and very maneuverable. His three attacks slowly drain enemies health. He can go in for punches as his basic moves, and is capable of the “Quick punh” attack where rapidly tapping a throws out a very rapid succession of 7 one-two punches. His weakness was running and attacking, since you lost control of him for two seconds while he did his charge attack. Fireball was his basic special, and pretty weak, though good for bombarding two people fighting on another side of the map. His first special was his “coin punch” attack, which drained health and temporarily stunned an enemy (A series of uppercut punches). His best special was tornado punch, where he grabs a character and spins and just beats the living daylights out of him, or her, and kicks them up into the air. He has a special throw move to boot, in which spinning the control stick allowed him to spin and throw a character pretty far in either direction. Much like how he fights Bowser in “Super Mario N64”.
Luigi: One of the four unlockables. Beat the game on one of the second hardest settings. Same attacks as Mario, except, for the coin attack. Mario can coin punch someone into the air, or intercept them in mid-air and coin punch them. Luigi could only use coin punch to attack people in mid-air. On the ground, if you hit (Up, B) the controls required to do coin punch; you’d instead do Luigi’s special, fire punch. In a lightning fast punch, Luigi would punch his enemy in a punch that sounds so loud it’s breaking the sound barrier. It severely drained health, and had no cooldown.
Kirby: Kirby was agility based. However, he was very durable. His special moves let him turn into a rock, pull a flying tackle, or, “eat a character”, absorb their special, and spit them back out. Also, he could “fly”, because he could double-quadruple jump, and he floated to the ground very slowly. His throwing attack, unlike most of the others, only threw the character a short distance, so it wasn’t meant for throwing people off of the map, like most other throws. However, it did a very large amount of damage, and left the victim stunned.
Yoshi: Not a well-balanced character, yoshi was a joke in super smash. He didn’t “suck”, but wasn’t the best of characters. He could “eat” a character, and spit him out to throw him, or spit him out as an egg, where it took four seconds for the character to escape. During this time, attacks done on the egg do reduced damage, but it allows yoshi to fight without being attacked back. Yoshi wasn’t very maneuverable, his jumping attack was high, but he was overall a not very good character. He was too vulnerable to ranged attacks, for one, and almost all his special attacks could be dodged by a player with a quick response time.
Samus: The heavy weapon Ranged character. Her jump was mediocre, but her double jump wasn’t great. She could shoot her gun, or charge it to deliver a whopping blow. She was quite maneuverable, and could drop small proximity mines. Also, she could do a powerful flaming flying tackle. She was vulnerable while charging. She could shoot out a “beam” which grabbed people and pulled them to her, and then she threw them. This allowed her to do her throwing attack on characters a couple meters away.
Donkey Kong: He was a tank in melee combat. His punches were powerful, though he’s vulnerable when charging up. He can charge a “super punch”, which is guaranteed to act like a very powerful second throwing attack. However, his special moves are basically punches and powerful spins and therefore, he depends on overpowering his enemies.
Pikachu: In my opinion, definitely one of the best, if not the best, character. Of all the characters in the game, he has the best agility. He can run, jump, move, and punch very quickly. Also, his ranged attack, lightning, is a strategical jewel. It is quick and does decent damage, plus, it jumps along the ground, including up and down slopes, until it hits its target. His special attacks are agility and thunderbolt. Agility does no damage, but allows him to move about 8 meters so fast he can’t be hit. Also, it can be done twice in a row. His second special, thunderbolt, is a melee attack so powerful that it hits any thing above you with a lightning bolt, and anything next to you with a massive shock.
Fox: He is focused on agility. His specials are reflective shield, which makes projectiles ricochet away, and a fast, flaming charge. His ranged attack does moderate damage, but it is fast and since it’s a laser pistol, it is semi-automatic.
Link: His sword makes his standard attacks quick and powerful. He can pull out bombs and throw them, or do a spinning sword jump. His ranged attack is a quick boomerang. He is quite powerful in the right hands.
Jigglypuff: Her specials are Sing, and a flying tackle. She moves and jumps like Kirby, but her throwing attack is a basic weak grab. She isn’t well balanced, and can be easily killed.
Captain Falcon: He has super powerful specials. He can do a flying fire tackle, or the falcon kick move, a very quick attack with a long range which damages an enemy and sends them flying. His standard special is falcon punch, the most powerful melee attack in the game. However, unlike DK’s punch which can be stored, this attack takes 2 seconds to do, and makes you vulnerable. However, if you can connect the punch with your enemy, it will probably destroy them.
Ness: A young boy with agility focused attacks. Not the most powerful, but he has more than enough tricky attacks. He can use the home-run move without the bat.
Maps
Peach’s Castle: A basic platform two storey map. Has a moving platform underneath.
Yoshi Dream World: A simple two storey map with clouds on either side acting as temporary platforms that evaporate over time.
Windy Gulch (Kirby): Two storeys, and a large tree in the middle which blows wind. It can slow you down.
Great Fox: Fox’s large spaceship. Very long, and you can fight on the back, the tailfin, or the engines. An Arwing ship flies around shooting at people.
Volcano: Three storey platform map, with one elevator platform. As you fight, lava rises to cover the whole map, goes down again, and repeats.
Hyrule Castle: Very fun map. Several storeys with structures and platforms to jump on. Random tornadoes appear, too.
Saffron City: Several buildings, and a helipad. A special door, if entered, will prompt a random pokemon to jump out and wreak havoc.
Jungle: Two storey map, and a barrel floating under the map, which can shoot you up or down if you land in it.
Items
Hammer: The most hilarious and deadliest video game weapon of all time. The character will run around the map, rapidly hitting it everywhere around them, with funny music playing. Getting hit by the hammer results in a massive amount of damage being taken.
Thermos: Explosive, and purple, for some reason. Holds items which fly out once destroyed.
Fire flower: Does a steady flame thrower attack which drains health. However, throwing it at an enemy delivers a lot of damage.
Home run bat: Many people assume it’s just another item to hit people with. However, if you use a special key configuration, it delivers so much damage that it almost, or does, kill a target.
Mine: Pick up. Drop. Step on. Boom.
Poke ball: Throwing it results in a random pokemon coming to help you, from the firebreathing Charizard to the useless Goldeen which flops around and does nothing.
Fan: Weak. Does very little damage. However, throwing it at an enemy makes for a good improvised ranged attack.
Ray gun: Annoying, and has about 30 shots. Semi-automatic, and stuns upon contact.
Barrel: Can be thrown and will roll around the map breaking when it hits a player and damaging a player it hits.
Light sword: A shiny purple death laser sword.
Crate: Can be thrown or punched to break. Stores items.
Tomato: Restores 50 percent of your health.
Heart: Full restore
Bob-Omb: Very, very annoying. If thrown at an enemy, it usually delivers an explosion enough to blow anyone in a five meter radius off the map. However, if not picked up quickly, it will run around the map until it explodes.
Red/Green shell: When hit or thrown, rolls around the map hitting people.
Star: Temporary invincibility
Pool shark: When planted, anyone that hits it bounces off.
NPC’s:
Metal Mario: A slow, metal version of Mario that only uses special moves and small punches. Takes damage at a normal rate, but requires many hits to kill.
Polygon’s: There is one for every character, and they look like purple “geom” Versions of their character.
Yoshi’s: One match requires you to face a horde of very weak yoshi’s.
Master Hand: The final boss. He is very hard to kill. He can transform into a gun, a drill, smash you, swat you, and squish you. Also, he/she/it can hit you around like a tennis ball. He has a lot of health.
Giant DK: Literally, just a super sized DK with more health. He is hard to throw.
