- Environmentalists give Barack Obama a pass on oil spill
I don't think usmarine is a tea party small government type, but Harmour certainly is which always brings about an irony in his posts about the current regime doing nothing in wake of the oil disaster
I don't think there's much the government/military can do about this. They don't have the tools for the job to go down there and do it themselves (apart from nukes lulz). People criticised Bush because they thought the federal government could do more to help the aftermath of Katrina with the tools they had which is rather different to something like an oil gusher below miles of ocean. I dunno
They can do stuff on the legal side though, we'll see what actually happens to BP (and Transocean/Haliburton and some other companies probably, but they're American so they'll get away scot-free) - I remember reading that when they tried to increase the liability cap and the Republicans voted down on it, most people here agreed because it wasn't fair on the other oil companies to have the liability cap increased and it would damage the oil business. It's always a lose-lose in situations like this, especially during times of elections... one of the fatal flaws of democracy.
They can't physically deal with the problem because they don't have the tools for it. They can't legally deal with the aftermath because its an election year and nobody will allow any sort of real legislation through
lol america

I think a lot of the anger at Obama is because he hasn't said much about what will happen regarding BP, Halliburton and TransOcean. Will the people responsible for murdering 11 workers, animal cruelty against thousands of animals, and the destruction of the economies of many Gulf Coast states be punished? Or will it be a simple "hey guys don't do it again plz", a small drop-in-the-bucket fine?

I don't know... I think Hurricane's right on the money on this one.

It looks like BP is crooked as hell.

I just learned today that for at least a decade the agency regulating BP was horribly corrupt!!! Even when Obama's administration took charge they didn't really try to fix it (only a couple of overtures in the beginning).
This may have gone back as far as the Clinton years, but definitely corrupt during Bush's and Obama's watch.

Pretty much... but that's American government for ya. Maybe the Libertarians are right after all -- at least when it comes to this government.Harmor wrote:

Apparently the congress hearing, they keep referring to BP as "British Petroleum" even though it's not called that anymore and the BP isn't supposed to stand for that anymore. Keep the retarded redneck nationalism going guys, and keep on leaving Haliburton/Transocean out of this, don't want American companies to get hurt now. Shit, might aswell give them some bailout money whilst you're ahead.
Did they do all this to the US bankers who destroyed the world economy? lulz
The UK government needs to step in and slap the US for all their useless jingoism. Funniest would have been if BP was an Israeli company.

If BP isn't British Petroleum, why would the UK government step in? Could it be because so many British pensions are invested in BP? Make sure you don't show any "retarded redneck nationalism" now...

There's no doubt that there's alot of British money in BP, but likewise for Americans. And it isn't called British Petroleum anymore, people keep saying that for the sake of nationalism. People are now mentioning Union Carbide/American banks and such in respect to the US congress grilling BP for doing a bad thing. It just looks stupid on behalf of the US government.
I think his point was that a lot of your politicians are referring to them as British Petroleum, something they haven't been called since 1998, in order to try to shift the economic damage to the UK. They're obviously a British company, and have a great deal of influence on how the British economy does, hence why British politicians would like to limit the damage that Obama does every time he makes a speech.FEOS wrote:

I don't think it's a matter of nationalism or trying to shift economic damage/blame to the UK. I think it's a matter of our politicians are mostly old codgers who remember BP as British Petroleum and think BP is just shorthand for that, not a new name for a different company--as most in the US probably do. That's some serious nuance, tbh.
I think you guys are just too touchy.

I don't think using British Petroleum rather than BP is so far fetched as you like to think FEOS, shifting the blame from a possibly corrupt government agency and a corrupt BP over to a whole other continent may suit a nationalistic agenda ... especially seeing as there are Americans involved deeply in what may have caused the accident ...
Interesting dilemma tbh ...

So far not a squeak towards Haliburton/Transocean and probably some other companies that should be brought into this. It only adds fuel to the fire when you see stuff like that. This is the problem, it's election year and the US government needs to be like this. Democracy in action.
They went after the company with the deepest pockets. Transocean will disappear as a company and reform under a new name in a few months.Mekstizzle wrote:

Yet from the more detailed information coming out now, it sounds like Transocean are the ones responsible. There was a control module which was reported by the operators as being faulty, which it was Transoceans responsibility to replace. They didn't replace it, they just turned it off.JohnG@lt wrote:

That control module should've sealed any leak in the event of a problem - but it didn't because it was turned off.
BP still did alot of stupid shit, also I heard that the US is opening criminal proceedings against all the companies involved in this not just BP. It just seems like the US Media and PR department of the government would rather keep things focused on BP for now.
People should watch this programme if they can:
http://beta.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b … eep_Water/
It's pretty damning towards BP but it also casts clouds over other companies. If your company is subcontracted and then told to do a poor job (like Halliburton and the cement) that doesn't absolve them of all responsibility. It's abit like war crimes and how "I was just following orders" shouldn't really be an excuse.
