we had a detection system in place to determine the origin of indirect fire attacks on our base when i was deployed. did many qrf missions going to places of origin only to find them gone by the time we get there.

this one time, a friend of mine fired his mac 10 into some dirt in some back yard and 4 minutes later police helicopters were flying over head. so to test the theory that they were able to detect the area where the round was fired, my friend waited for the chopper to leave and then my friend did it again and sure enough, it was back within minutes.

Sure it wasn't;
Neighbor to the east of your 'friend' calls 911 "hey, someone's shooting to my west"
Neighbor to the west of your friend calls 911 "hey, someone's shooting to my east"
Edit: That's why I love where I live. If I go out in the back yard to go shooting and the cops show up, it's because I know them and they want to do some shooting too. And the "back yard" has targets at 100 yards, 415 yards, 850 yards, 915 yards, and 1300 yards. 1/2" drop forged plate steel makes a resounding "whump" when hit by magnum rifle rounds at 400+ yards. you know when you hit just by sound.
