didn't we go over this in another thread, about people who have worked and paid taxes then lost their job and end up on welfare (for example)? They've paid for it.

unemployment insurance is paid for by people who work, for the time when you loose your job. It is meant to help you out while you find other work and has a termination.

Welfare is not insurance. it is not paid for by those that collect it, and it can go on as a life style.

*12 months free from work with pay when a baby is born, divided between mum and dad?
*Subcidised kindergarden?
*A place to stay when I get old?
*Free money aka pension from the government when I stop working at 67?

LOL, Can you elaborate how any of that is NOT coddling? Your "free" shit is not "free". Someone has to work to cover those costs

Besides, life in Europe is different than it is here, form my short time in Germany, I got the impression that you do not have near the problem with leeching as we do here. Yes you are socialist, but most everyone works, and does not spend their time trying to scam the taxpayer.

Moderation, openness and honesty are things that the public sector Greece and Spain lacked. Look at the shit that hasn't happened in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, etc. (I mentioned those countries, because they happen to be close and I have some level of knowledge how stuff works over there irl instead of madafaking wiki).

Sure, there's always a certain level of leeching (to put it in lowings words), but it's a necessary evil in order to provide assistance to those who really need and should have it.

I.e. Greece has lied about total spending figures since they joined the EU (or was it EMU), because nobody wants to cut their precious benefits given to them from borrowed money. The tits.

Well we do, Germany has what, 3,5 million people without jobs and they receive Hartz IV unemployment money, here in Latvia more than 10% are unemployed. And of course many don't even try to find a job.

I realise there is a difference but are you saying no-one who is unemployed is on welfare? Surely not true. Or, if they are working, then they pay taxes, but earn shit money, so in effect they get some taxes back don't they, if they also receive some welfare checks to help 'em out. Like the people in this article as I understand it.

I remember it quite well. What a cockup. Almost 20 years later, and the U.S. practically repeated it. Housing bubble and cheap loans ftl. Only I remember interest rates going up hard afterwards. Really hard. So in that sense the reaction to the depression was opposite.

At no point were public services cancelled. Some more privatization in healthcare was brought alongside the public sector to decrease the pressure and spending of the sector (which was subject to cuts, of course). This way queues in the public sector were held relatively short.

Government steers most social politically important areas of business, also by regulating the private sector.

I could be really wrong in what I remember, because I was only 10-12 years old. On thing I remember vividly is that my dad paid just interest for a few months on his newly bought Alfa because they went up so fast.

Attitude seems to be different in Europe thn in the US. You feel you have some sort of "right" to a quality of life, ( coddling). Here we tend to believe that the only "right" you have is the right to a free country that affords the opportunities for you to find your own way.

If ytou know it is not free, then stop calling it free. Although it is free to those that don't contribute to it, now isn't it?

well why not? That's what we pay taxes for. Maybe you get fuck all for your taxes, I dunno.

You know, all that stuff is what you get when you live in a positive, progressive society. The funny thing is hardly anyone complains about it, even those paying really high taxes, cos it's just part of our social philosophy. I find it kinda hilarious and sad that anyone would bother complaining about some people who are living in poverty are getting 100 dollars extra. To me that's like...wtf is the problem. it's a GOOD thing.
