A bike handling course wouldn't be bad thing either. Over here they're around 200€ for 1-2 days. They're worth plenty more than what they cost.

Make sure you wear a proper leather bike jacket. If you aren't down to wear leather pants, make sure you have thick denim. Also, boots and padded gloves.

Your first bike should NOT be something insanely fast / anything-near-fast... you need to learn to drive a motorcycle before you drive a dangerous one...
