Jailbreaking actually allows you to enable the battery percentage, but I'm not sure if it has that ability from the get-go. My friend jailbroke his Touch and put all sorts of stupid shit on it that kills the battery in like an hour without even doing anything, the battery drops like a percent every minute just scrolling the menu.
