A tearful Detective Shandy Cobane told reporters the words he used "were offensive and unprofessional."

"A day has not passed that I wished I could rewind the events of that night and take back those hateful words," he added.

Cobane apologized to the Latino community, saying, "I know that my words cut deep and were very hurtful."

"Please know that I am truly, truly sorry," the officer said.
Hey dick, not good enough. You are a racist piece of trash.

If this hadn't been caught on tape there would not be an issue.
My younger brother lives in  Portland, and he describes the North West coast as a fortress like mentality. Hispanics are viewed as the enemy. In his words " they try and come up here for work and we kick their asses out. They devalue the wages and there are no jobs to spare. Mexicans caught walking alone will likely be beaten up, at least. "

Now, I posted that to shed some light on the mentality, as reported to me. When I was contemplating different areas to relocate to I was warned about Portland " any business that has a Hispanic worker will be shunned ". That was when I was entertaining taking one of my workers with me ( and no, I no longer have any illegal aliens working for me. After I started doing e-verify for payroll I got proof they had bogus docs. Its complicated, a lot of mexicans are taught to run to the labor board when they are fired and cry discrimination or injury or wage abuse. With e-verify, I had proof that they were unemployable. And the economy tanked making it easy ).

So any ways, these bastard cops have a guy on the ground. I guess I can see them wanting total compliance but I have zero tolerance for men and women under the color of authority shouting racist shit and stomping a guy. The stupid fuckers are on " administrative leave ", which means a slap on the wrist while getting paid.

They should be charged with the same kind of hate crime I would be if it were me and thrown in prison where the Mexicans would deal with them.

Yeah that's the one thing that'd keep me from moving to the Pacific NW. It's not very diverse and not very integrated, or so it seems. I mean, I'm white so it wouldn't be a problem for me per se, but I'd rather not live somewhere where people cross to the other side of the street when a black guy or mexican guy is walking toward them.

Is it really that bad? You always think of the deep South being the racially intolerant part of America.

So all the gay people up there (there are loads of them) are intolerant to other races? Very interesting...

Great Post ATG

thank God for video tape

and its all because the cops were looking for suspects, what BS. And to think that this is the type of stop contemplated in the AZ law, I bet that he would have arrested him for no ID and called it justified, even if he had ID on him.  Its why discretion can't be left to the police. You simply can not get away with saying, the law doesn't provide for stomping so the cops actions are illegal, without looking into the law regarding how these cops handled these citizens. IMO just because you're looking for armed suspects doesn't mean you get to treat every citizen as an armed suspect. The cops broke the rights of those citizens by making them get down on the ground and caused property damage to their clothes. Cops have far too much discretion and it only when video tape emerges that we get the real story about what happened.

Crying I'm sorry now doesn't tell us how many times in the past BS like this has happened. and saying sorry now doesn't prevent it from happening again in the future. This guy and chick stomping him should be fired on the spot, don't pass go and don't collect a check... period. And if the chief of police does not do that, then he is agreeing with their actions and he needs to be fired too. These cops are wiping their asses with the constitution.

In fact what we need is personal video cameras on each and every officer to monitor their every action and every word they say while they are supposedly enforcing the law and protecting the constitution. The days of giving these guys the benefit of the doubt are long over, the more video like this that comes to light just helps to disprove the myth that a cops word is to be believed unconditionally. This is one area where technology can fix racism.

The South is definitely a lot more diverse, which is different from integrated.

Something doesn't add up here.  First of all, if businesses hiring Latinos are shunned by customers, I would think not many places would choose to hire them then.   Second, over time, if these trends were true, then I would think word would get out, and Latinos would stop coming to the Pacific Northwest.

Basically, I'm getting the impression that your brother has seen a lot of racism, but he's overstating the presence of it a bit.

Makes sense...  Generally speaking, racial minorities are less tolerant of gays, because minorities tend to be more religious.

We saw this with Proposition 8.

It's ironic, but oftentimes, there is more discrimination between minorities than there is between straight whites and minorities.

Up here, mexicans are ok if they aren't seen and aren't heard.  They can work agriculture, they can work in the back of restaurants, they can do some construction.  But we don't get crowds forming outside the home depot.  They aren't hired to interact with the public.  You'll never go through a fast food window and not understand what the server is saying.  People just don't tolerate that.  There's no need for them.  There are plenty of natives willing to do those jobs.  I'm not sure a mexican would get beaten just for walking alone, maybe by redneck cops.

So, you're saying that a Latino who speaks like an everyday person and works hard isn't treated like a normal citizen up there?

No, I know plenty of latinos who speak english and get along just fine.  We generally categorize illegals as people who can't speak english, or can't speak english well enough to understand.

The cost of living down in california is so ridiculous that it's easy for mexicans to fit into the economic cracks.  In many counties up here, even during good times, unemployment is 8-10%,  there's simply no room for mexicans to get jobs.

Out of curiosity, what drives the unemployment up so high there?

Dependency on the forestry industry.

yep.  a steady decline in forestry.  It started 25 years ago and has continued.  It'll probably take another 15 or 20 years before things stabilize.

They are. Oregon in particular was becoming a haven for corporations fleeing California until they passed the stupid increase in corporate taxes a few months ago. Teachers union essentially torpedoed future economic growth in the state.

they're trying, but it takes a long time.  For 130 years the ENTIRE northwest economy was based on cutting down trees.

Well that sucks...

Washington state seems to be quite different from Oregon.  They don't even have an income tax.  They also have some of the highest population growth in the country.

Portland seems like it would be a great place to live if you have a lot of money.  The climate looks excellent in terms of temperature variance.  It rarely ever seems to get that hot or that cold.

Thank god it was taped, or they'd be free to lie their way out as so often happens.

Don't trust the Police, don't give them special privileges, don't necessarily believe their word over a member of the public even if they are a crim - or you'll end up in a fascist state like California.
