yeah, like i said with the tobacco thing... there's a lot of factors and societal influences that contribute to lifestyles being really shitty.

it's a shame that happy meals had to go in silicon valley, but they're striking one of those negative influences off the top of a very long list.

gotta start somewhere.

Do you get an hour with a hooker if you by a Mazda?
No, see, the auto industry is ethical.
Macdonalds isn't.

You don't get a hot chick with the car when you buy it. That's the point.

using sex to sell to responsible, reasonable, level-minded adults is different from using toys to sell incomprehensibly unhealthy food to children. marine, what can't you fucking understand? the argument isn't that mcdonalds is especially unhealthy - or more unhealthy than 'x' brand or 'y' fast-food - it's the fact that they use TOYS to LURE children to wanting their product. the children don't want the BURGER as much as they want the DUMB LITTLE TOY. if any other super-unhealthy fast-food chain started using similar marketing methods of selling their product, they would no doubt be reprimanded for it as well (in silicon valley, that is).

While we're at it, let's take away all responsibility for the parents. Lets take all children born and place them in state run orphanages where they will receive the prescribed amount of hugs per day, are given equal amounts of food, are all given a uniform to wear so that no one can make fun of their clothing, equal access to education, health care and time with a psychologist to root out their antisocial behavior. Lets take it one step further and genetically engineer all children so they have the same IQ, the same skin color and are the same size so that no one is bullied, no one does better in class than anyone else and no one can be stereotyped based on the color of their skin. Fuck it, lets just neuter everyone at birth and instead of producing children the old fashioned way, we'll just clone the perfect specimens, one male, one female, and not have to worry about anyone being 'disadvantaged' ever again.
oh come on galt.

you can do better than that.
You wanna have a go at it?

No, the message is, buy this car -> hot chicks will flock to you.
Anyone can see past that.

Buy a meal -> get a toy.
There is nothing to see past and parents can't argue with it.

jesus fucking christ read my last post and stop being such a purposefully obtuse cunt.

there are more causes and factors for child rates of obesity than just mcdonalds happy meal toys... yes, ok. but at least they're taking some legislative action to try and improve the situation, somewhere and somehow. mcdonalds isnt the small family-owned business at the end of the street; they won't go bust as a result of this (very minor) change, and kids will have more freedom in choosing what food they want and wont be mentally duped into wanting the toy-deal. nobody really gets hurt by this law, the overall quality of the experience improves for everyone. no stupid pressure on parents to buy cheap, tacky, useless toys with their calorific food, and the kids will actually put some thought into what they WANT to eat rather than what they want to PLAY with afterwards. i enjoyed the toys at BK and Maccy D's as much as anyone else... but i can see the point and intent of this law. if you can't, you must be fucking retarded.

some americans try way too fucking hard to stick to their absurd, arbitrary ideological guidelines...

look, it's a VERY SIMPLE precedent: kids are idiots. kids see bright awesome toy. kids put pressure on parents to have toy despite the dietary choice being... less than great. it's not about parents giving away their responsibility or shirking away from their role in place of faceless corporations; it's just that the happy meal idea either encourages shitty eating habits in children subliminally/ostensibly, or puts parents in shitty, difficult and awkward situations: give the kid the toy and keep them happy, or appear to be an asshole parent for denying your kid something they want for a reason that, essentially, they won't understand. macdonalds make enough profit and can sell enough burgers without using the carrot-on-a-stick that is a toy. if you don't understand it and you're getting all THIS IS AGAINST MAW CUNSTEETUSHUN then move to a fucking commune in the rocky moubntains and live on deer or some shit.
It's the parents job to be the asshole and to tell them no. It's not the parents job to be their friend. Kids aren't dolls, they don't exist for the parents amusement. If my kid grows up resenting me because I denied him a Happy Meal he can go fuck himself all the way to his whiny sniveling hipster friends of whom I'm sure at least one will be a sociologist/psychologist who can help him out.
