"No, it wasn’t the Tea Party protest against the health care bill last month in Washington, D.C. It was the protest that union leaders staged in Springfield, Illinois this week, calling on state legislators to raise taxes–or else.

The threats were direct, they were physical, and they were made in broad daylight. Yet there was no outrage from a media that has, in general, been at great pains to cast the Tea Party movement as violent and extreme.

The man delivering the threats was Henry Bayer, director of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). But there are plenty of union workers who would prefer to keep their jobs without paying higher taxes.

A bipartisan consensus is emerging in Illinois that the solution to the state’s terrible financial mess–the second-worst in the nation after California–is to cut spending. In today’s Chicago Tribune, Democratic state senator Jack Franks writes:

Illinois doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem. State revenue this year is at the third-highest level in the history of Illinois. We have more money than we had in 2007… Those who see an income tax increase as the only solution do not understand the problem… We have to shrink the size of government through better accounting and restrained spending.

Illinois voters seem to agree. Gov. Pat Quinn, who took over from fellow Democrat Rod Blagojevich last year, is running on a pledge to raise taxes–and trailing badly against Republican state senator Bill Brady."

Our debt crisis, at the state and federal levels, could be solved by leaders from both parties who are prepared to grapple with fiscal reality. That is what people at the Tea Party demonstrations–who come from a variety of political backgrounds–have been advocating, peacefully.

But we will struggle to solve our problems in a climate of intimidation. It’s about time the media took notice of the violent rhetoric of those who want to force Americans to part with more of what we earn.

Yep, unions can be pretty insane in their own right, and unfortunately, they were the ones that pushed for the GM bailout.

Like the fucking French unions, some of whom even imprisoned loads of tourists, who were trying to get home despite the ash clouds, in a train station and would not let them get onto the coach the airline had sent to get them home.

What a bunch of pricks, just deliberately making peoples lives more difficult.

I've always heard the Greek unions were the worst of all.

I don't know. I've never encountered any Greek unions.

The French ones are full of absolute cunts though. The vast majority of people have been pulling together and helping stranded people out throughout the big travel fuck up. It's in situations like that you see peoples true colours.

I like that they hold the sign upside down.

But I don't understand that if they raise up taxes, they're going to raise up living costs and who is that going to benefit?

So basically if all public workers where still making 40-50k, property taxes and income tax would be lower and that would make the cost of living lower? They have to get their money from somewhere and sadly they're getting it from themselves.

Actually,  the violent attacks have all ready begun.  We are way past threats.

I am a-fucking-mazed as to how the media has successfully (and falsely) marginalized the 'tea baggers'.  It is absolutely disgusting, disgraceful and widely ignored.

Try the ATU Local 689 here in DC. That's Amalgamated Transit Union. Maybe it meant well when it began, but now all it does is give subway operators six-figure incomes (although granted you have to put in a lot of overtime, but still that's a LOT of money for sitting on your ass and pushing a few buttons all day). All the employees in the union know that their jobs are pretty secure, so there's no incentive for them to give good customer service. Their horribly inflated wages aren't helping with the budget problem either, but since it's a government-funded agency they have no reason to care if it goes broke because someone will invariably come to save it.

The one problem with unions is their ability to maintain closed ranks and say "pull up the ladder jack... I'm all right."
At one time unions used to lift up everyone with the push for the 5 day work week, workplace safety,  holidays etc etc....

and another thing, "American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)." its a public sector union... like a teachers union. There's a problem with permitting these workers to unionize when they can withdraw vital services AND can suck off of a never ending supply of tax money. On TV they were talking about the need to fire teachers all accross the country... and my position would be that we need all those bodies so no one gets fired, just cut everyone's pay. and if they don't like it they can quit.

This is going to be one interesting fight.... white collar pencil pushing bureaucrats taking to the streets in violence... I believe it when I see it.

The really funny thing is that a lot of people who are unionized in the public sector vote GOP because I guess they consider themselves to be "elite" and don't want to pay high taxes..... but they get paid with tax money... ohhh the hypocrisy.

Ohh BTW on the OP... whose to say that some of  these guys don't also support the Tea Party... a lot of people don't care about prinicple all they care about is themselves and what's in it for them. "I want low taxes.... except if it means a pay cut for me..."

Ah... Reminds me of the D that got caught tossing bricks through his party's front window.

So gs what's your point?  Are you insinuating the two 'beat each other up'?
