Yeah Pinatubo was big as far as recent goes but thats nothing compared to the Laki Fissure eruptions in Iceland in 1783 (same sort of area as this current one), that pumped out the same volume of SO2 and CO2 as the Pinatuba eruption every three days and lasted 8 months.Ilocano wrote:

I was just using the Laki Fissure as a relevant example that most of the time when it comes to Earth science there has been a bigger / worse example of most things.
EDIT: For the record The siberian traps are the biggest example of super plume volcanism for the past 500Ma years, they normally happen every 200,000 years if I remember right but aren't at all regular in their timing.

Yeah, I was referring to only recent events that we could relate to. In my case, Pinatubo was that big old "inactive" volcano that I could see from the town I was born in. I only experienced the aftermath. But seeing two story homes completely submerged in ashes (lahar) sure put a perspective of humanity into me.Noobeater wrote:

Aye, it was a pretty dammed huge eruption as far as they go. It is used in most of the textbooks as an example simply as it is such a good example of what a good sized eruption can do both to the local area and to the climate over the short term.Ilocano wrote:
