I think the trends Zeek is noticing, (popularity of certain types of music,) are caused by geographical location. The reason the big rock acts are still very popular here is the fact that NZ and Aus, (mostly NZ,) are overlooked by big acts while somewhere like the UK is never overlooked. That being the case a big act coming to the UK isn't worthy of much consideration while in NZ in particular it still very much is. That's not to say NZ and Aus tastes are less developed or behind, it's just that scarcity has led to a different appreciation of big acts.

As for the type of music that's produced here, you've got to look at it from a different perspective. In NZ in the period I think you're referring to music was dominated by Polynesian roots music, (most likely Fat Freddy's Drop.) It doesn't really compare to surfer-rock, (despite similarities in feel,) and doesn't reflect a "lag", more different tastes due to cultural identity. Think of it kind of like K-Pop in Korea.

You're right though about individual 'magnified' music scenes caused most likely by relative isolation. Of course none of the bands I post semi-regularly in the "What Are You Listening To" thread would be considered huge even here; by our standards a band is considered successful if they break into Australia and gargantuan if they get a minimal showing in the US or UK, (many still remember that the first iPod silhouette ad features a song from a NZ band - the second was from an Aussie band.) But we're realistic and know that no NZ act has ever achieved real international notoriety. The way I see it though is that small unknown acts from NZ or Aus are no better or worse than small unknown acts from anywhere else, the thing is with the music industry empires being located where they is that any label wanting to take a risk with a new act can just shop closer to home and be just as likely of success. The bonus of this is that we don't have to deal with any mass-produced pop shit coming out of NZ but additionally the few "adequate" NZ acts don't really get much of a look-in. When they do you wouldn't know they were from NZ anyway.

Although in terms of innovation in the music scene it was an NZer who came up with "Popstars" and by association the whole horrible trend of talent quest-type TV programs. We are all still very very sorry about that.

literally haven't heard of him once. whoever he is, he clearly isn't making as much of an 'impact' on the underground culture of london as he purports to be. his 'about me' also makes him come across like an insufferable twat. been looking at his work as well and it all seems incredibly corny... a bit like surf/ska culture circa 2001. most of his work seems to date from then as well. it's an artistic style you'd more likely see in newquay or falmouth than in london, which is far more urban (either in a grimy sense or a clean sophisticated sense).

wow, that was probably CKY's last show and it ended up being a big disappointment thanks to Deron "Basket Case" Miller. Shame that he had to be so unprofessional when the other three band members were obviously trying to make it a great show. Sounded good at the start but then it just broke down.

At least I got a picture with Phil Margera lol.

well sorry your highness

The show started fine, they opened with Escape From Hellview and everyone sounded good. Deron seemed happy to be there. But as the night went on he seemed to get drunker and angrier. There were some technical issues with Deron's guitar and he just started getting really pissed off and didn't want to play any fan requests. At one point he just started scratching his mic against his guitar strings and was generally being an ass. Then he threw his guitar at Jess's drum set (missed by a mile) and closed the show with Close Yet Far... with one guitar playing. You could tell all the other band members were a bit disgusted by his behavior and they were trying really hard to make up for it.

Raab Himself came on at one point to say hi and sang a bit, and Bam sang along for Santa's Coming. Phil also dressed up in a Santa suit and threw free stuff at the audience lol.

e: Here's an example of the night degenerating into badness

I'm importing some videos including ones from earlier in the show when they still sounded fine.

Here's the videos I took from the concert. Pretty sure it's all in order, like I said it started off well but by the end Deron was just too douchey to function

The only good thing about country music is the chicks who listen to it. Super. Hot.

I'm going with one

Edit: I'll be sure to bring my concert ear plugs to filter out the tumultuous, high-pitched screams during Taylor Swift
