actually, stalin and mao were not very close friends, but they were allies...of sorts. mao had a very different view of communism than stalin did. Stalin did not trust mao at all, stalin viewed china as one of his largest threats. some actually speculate that if MacArthur did invade china, the soviet union wouldve done very little to aid china.

Bump. Almost confirmed that it was a North Korean torpedo attack which sunk the ship. Ruh-oh

An anonymous US official in Washington told the Associated Press that the investigating team would lay out evidence that the sinking of the Cheonan was the result of a North Korean torpedo attack.

Part of a torpedo propeller is said to have been discovered on the seabed and traces of explosive found on the wreck are said to match that used in a North Korean torpedo recovered a few years ago.

If it was indeed a NK torpedo, it wouldn't surprise me. They always seem to be trying to instigate something one way or another so when it eventually kicks off, they've got an excuse to march south.

Seeing how the North's artillery could decimate Seoul in 5 minutes, I don't think the South is going to do much.

Scuds tbh.

But seriously, it would make sense to fire on the South's Batteries, then Seoul.

They still have enough old Soviet long-range artillery lined up to flatten the city within minutes.

Seoul's location so close to the potential front line is a result of post-World War II partitioning, when U.S. officials picked the 38th parallel to divide the peninsula in half while barely keeping Seoul out of the communist-controlled sector. In the rapid postwar development of South Korea, nearly half the country's population ended up within a three-minute flight of the DMZ.

Estimates of the damage that could be inflicted by a North Korean attack range from bad to apocalyptic. Lee Yang Ho, defense minister during a similar nuclear crisis in 1994, said one computer simulation conducted during his term projected 1 million dead, including thousands of Americans.

"It is assumed that if the United States were to strike North Korea that the North Koreans would fight back," Lee said. "All industry would be destroyed, gas stations, power plants. This is such a densely populated area that even if North Korean artillery were not very accurate, anyplace you would hit there would be huge numbers of casualties."

---

The arsenal includes 13,000 artillery pieces, along with rockets, multiple-rocket launchers and more than 650 ballistic missiles. Warheads on the missiles can be armed with nerve gas and blistering and choking agents.

yeah, the NK hasn't been fucking around up there. they've been stockpiling and training for decades. Only problem is, a sea invasion if NK would probably end in disaster. Seeing how their entire coast is fortified with anti ship weapons, bunkers, MG nests the works. A land based invasion would end the same, since the entire country is essentially brainwashed into nationalism would be a nightmare. Plus getting accross the DMZ without getting blasted by mines and artillery.

TBH the best way to do it would be to... bomb them back to the stone age.

However, as stated, that means having Seoul razed to the ground, along with a large proportion of its 24 million (in the general area anyway) people.

I say we move Seoul south by a couple hundred clicks...

But I don't see why NK would want to fuck around right now. Maybe KJI wants to destroy them before he dies?

Hehe.

The North every few months has to have a flare up (much like hemorrhoids) just to show the world that they are still around and must be taken 'seriously'.  Kim Jung is an attention whore.

Yeah, this is just a move to protect his family's position so his son can take over, can't appear weak and run the risk of a coup.

The measures South Korea has taken draw a line, once and for all, under the more optimistic era of growing trade and engagement between the two Koreas.

In his live television address, President Lee Myung-bak warned of a danger of complacency.

In addition, South Korea says it will resume "psychological operations" against the North, a reference to the radio and loudspeaker broadcasts that were suspended in 2004, and meet any further attack with an immediate military response.

It may also try to use the referral to the UN Security Council to push for a toughening of sanctions, a move that would infuriate the North.
So I wonder if NK's gonna follow through with its all-out war threat. Probably not.
