My thoughts:
First off, no, it's not BOB which was insanely good I think. But it's not BOB because they're on the other side of the world. It was a completely different war basically, just fought at the same time. Listen to Hanks talk in the intros and you get an idea that there's just a island with an air base they need to take because air pretty much ruled in the Pacific. So the Marines would fight on an island with almost no buildings effectively to attack and airfield so the Japanese couldn't have it. Then they'd sit around for orders and hop on a boat and take the next one. While the European theater was (almost) all land warfare with civilians and huge cities and buildings and open land. You can't make two series the same if the setting is completely different.
Episode 3:
Spoiler (highlight to read):
Didn't you hear when Hanks said the Marines took A YEAR off in Aussie land? How the hell do you make a show about a 3 and half year war and skip a year off? ...Episode 3: "Meanwhile, we join our boys back in the pacific 1 year after from the last episode..." "Wait, WHAT? A year later!!!" Doesn't work. Yes, I'm aware we all tuned in to a WWII show to see action but that was WWII for those guys.
Anyway, no it probably won't stack up to BOB (though episodes 5 and 6 helped!) but they set the bar pretty fucking high with it. All in all I like it and respeck to Tom and Steven and $150 mil worth of investors for shedding light on a lesser known side of the war.
P.S. yeah it kinda needed an intro episode or summat. I didn't really get who was who until late episode 4 or so. 5 and 6 I'm caught up for sure though. I'll just need to watch it through again when I'm done and I'm sure it'll make more sense. I kinda needed to for BOB cause I was focusing on the entire company because I didn't know which of them would be the major characters, but still not nearly as bad as this show.

funny thing about the pacific theater is that Army did more amphibious assaults than the USMC did

Don't get me wrong. I really like the Pacific so far. And yes I heard that they took a year off.pirana6 wrote:

USMC weren't really considered that important back then as they are now.eleven bravo wrote:

The irony of guns, is that they can save lives.
I didn't know that, about the army doing more.War Man wrote:

AFAIK the Marines did a better job though, otherwise we'd be hearing about the US Army all the time.
And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.
i think: lots of ppl think army = usmc
I think, lots of people should know why they live safely in the country they live in. Knowing the branches of the military contributes to that.menzo wrote:

Seriously who the heck doesn't know every branch of the US military? You've got USAF, US army, US navy, US coast guard, and everything put together, USMC.

you would be surprised, not everybody is interested in the military you know-Sh1fty- wrote:

Menzo, it's common knowledge. You should at least know there's 5 branches of the US military and their names. You don't have to know what they do.
Don't people learn anything in school anymore?

Why should Menzo, a Dutchman, have to learn the branches of the US military?-Sh1fty- wrote:

Yeah, we learn actual important and practical information, not the divisions of a foreign military... And clearly you dont know it that well if you dont know that USMC is part of the Navy. Do you know the divisions of the Canadian military?-Sh1fty- wrote:

You guys are fucking assholes the way you judge me all the time. I'm saying AMERICANS should know the branches of the AMERICAN military.
Also, I knew the USMC was in the department of the Navy, I just didn't know if it was called a "Department".

Dont put the USMC above the rest of the world then, theyre not superheroes you know.
You told menzo, a European, that he was supposed to know the branches of the US military. You never said Americans.

Jesus fucking Christ Sherrif, stop being such a jackass.
I mean Americans alright? What part of that do you not understand? I mistook her for an American, I didn't know he was from Amsterdam until I read his location.
FUCK you guys get me mad, I shouldn't get mad over such low IQ BS around here.
Lets get this straight.
I'm saying, somebody who's American should at least know there's 5 branches of the US military, and their names. They don't have to know what fucking lubricant they clear their ARs with.
Get over yourself, especially since that's not much to get over
I don't give a shit about the British military, because I'm not British, if I was I should know the branches. It's mixing cops and firefighters up just because they both protect you.
