Echoes of the Big Bang Revealed by European Spacecraft

This all-sky image of the cosmic microwave background, created by the European Space Agency's Planck
satellite, shows echoes of the Big Bang left over from the dawn of the universe.

The mission is aimed at taking some of the most detailed data yet on the cosmic microwave background, a relic of the Big Bang's explosion — which, 13.7 billion years on, still hangs around the universe as a pocked veil of radiation.

By studying the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background, researchers hope to answer fundamental questions about the origin and evolution of the universe, including what main ingredients were present at its fiery beginnings.

Planck takes measurements at wavelengths between the infrared and radio — not in visible light — that reveal an otherwise invisible population of galaxies shrouded in dust, billions of years in the past.

These cloaked galaxies formed stars at astonishing rates, some 10 to 1,000 times higher than we see in our own galaxy today, and are some of the coldest places in the universe.

"This is a first step, we are just learning how to work with these data and extract the most information," said Jean-Loup Puget of the National Center for Scientific Research in France, a principal investigator on the Planck mission, which was launched in 2009.
The European Space agency is really stepping up their role in Space. I'm happy to hear this since the US government seems hell bent on reducing theirs.

I got a question about space exploration. As far as I now, digital photography is a recent thing. If so, then how did we get pictures from space missions that go as far back as the 70's (Pioneers 10 and 11)? Its just something I've alays wondered about...

False color images of various instrument readings.  There are digital imaging systems on Voyager I...and that was launched way back in the 70's.  The first US patent for a digital camera was issued in late 60's (I think).  Digital cameras and digital imaging systems aren't that new.

A US astronaut has lost his place on the next space shuttle mission next month, after falling off his bicycle.

Tim Kopra was injured in a cycling accident at the weekend.
His place as the lead spacewalker on the shuttle's flight will be taken by another astronaut, Steve Bowen.

The mission has been postponed several times because of technical problems. But the last-minute change is not expected to delay Discovery's 24 February launch any further.

Discovery is due to make a cargo-delivery run to the International Space Station.
Nasa has not released details of Mr Kopra's injury, citing medical privacy.  The accident took place near his home and did not involve any other vehicles.

Discovery's launch has been on hold since the autumn to repair cracks in its fuel tank. The flight is among the final missions for the space shuttles, which are being retired this year.

I had heard about him.  What a bummer.  I bet he's just sick.

For anyone with access to iplayer, horizon have done some interesting programs on physics:

And this was pretty interesting:

the horizon episode on reality is fucking insane. i could only cope with it with the help of my friend mr. jamesons and some funny green herbs. Horizon is one of those things that makes the BBC, the BBC.

i was hoping it would be a proper ontological enquiry but it was just the same old quantum physics for dummies shit rehashed

the bbc have been doing the same quantum physics science shit for like 5 years now

it wasn't that good

i did (A-level) physics and we never touched on quantum - to me when they got to the holographic idea my head was literally melting. But i like that, they do generally give a comprehensive view of a subject, intersperse it with simple-to-understand ideas but leave you wanting to learn more.

and in fairness the only other long-running docu type shows we have on UK tv are Panorama (ie, grab headline in news and sperge about it) and something that was on C4 that was like Horizon crossed with the Sun (paper)

Scientists Plan To Clone Woolly Mammoth
Well, it turns out these prehistoric beasts are in the headlines once again with Japanese scientists claiming that they can bring them back into existence. Researchers at Kyoto University are working with a research lab in Russia that preserved a piece of woolly mammoth soft tissue that was discovered last summer which they state will help them produce a living-breathing baby mammoth within 5-6 years. The idea is to extract intact DNA from the Russian sample and then insert it into the living egg cells of a modern African elephant. If all goes well, a mammoth embryo would essentially be produced inside the egg of the elephant.

....There is a good chance this process will not work. After all, the biological material is thousands of years old and has undergone a great deal of degradation. But, perhaps the Siberian permafrost preserved everything the researchers need to complete their goal. The team is also questioning what the next step will be if the cloning actually works. The team states that they will examine the mammoth's ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct in the first place.

The 2008 cloning of a mouse using 16 year-old biological material was indeed the first achievement of its kind. There however was a previous record from a Chinese researcher who managed to clone frozen cells that were almost a year old. If the cloning of a long-extinct woolly mammoth from cells frozen in the permafrost for thousands of years can be achieved, it would truly be a magnificent feat.
