So a few months ago I was in an at fault auto accident and my auto rate was adjusted. GIECO decided to raise my auto rate from $2000 for 6 months to $5000 for 6 months. I switched to E-surance and only pay $2500 for 6 months and have a M3 fully covered so I will see GIECO in hell.

in any case do you think the government should set guidlines on auto insurance rates? If everyone paid the same rate, it would mean good drivers would have to cover bad. If left unregulated, insurance companies could set any rate they want but good drivers would have lower rates yet many people would not be able to afford to drive.

so which would you prefer?

insurance companies and banks are two institutions who manage to operate in the negative financially, and continually screw people over for their own gain.  thats all i have to say about that.

If bad drivers can't afford to drive it's win/win for the rest of us.

Agreed.
Definition of bad driver needs to be clear though. For me is everyone who puts others at risk with their reckless and unsafe driving. From the granny who drives too slow to the playboy showing off how fast his Maserati goes.

I want less government control, not more.

GIECO has always quoted me higher than everyone else and I have a perfect record.

Not at all. Also have a great credit score and drive less than 15 miles a day. My area is high for auto theft though. Maybe GIECO had a lot of claims in my area. Other companies were much less than GIECO.

John I like you and all but I think the banks and insurance companies could rape and murder your immediate and extended family and you'd still defend them to the death

I've always wondered why they give discounts for good grades though. They have no bearing on how well you drive.

Does anyone think the govt could regulate anything and make it cheaper or more fair?
Check out their track record.

Also Mac you live in NY and everything is more expensive there
so that the govt can pay for all the entitlement programs.

Can I ask: Your premium for coverage for 6 months was $5,000?
What sort of car do you have?

It all factors in. People who work hard and pay attention in class generally pay more attention while driving.

I don't love the banks or insurance companies, I just understand the services they provide and how they make their money. Insurance as a business makes very little profit from it's monthly fees. They make the vast majority of their money in short term investments like bonds, stuff they can liquify in a hurry if there is a disaster or something.

His auto insurance going up to $5k because of an at fault auto accident is entirely justifiable.

One at fault accident causing the insurance company to more than double the insurance rate on a hair trigger seems justifiable?

Further more, many people rely heavily on their cars for work and school purposes. Wouldn't letting insurance companies have a free run with rates cause many people to not be able to afford their insurance and cause some folks out there to drive without insurance because they would have to for work even though they cannot afford insurance?

That is expensive.

Mine is AUS$70 per month so AUS$840 per annum. I am a rating 1 (least risk category).

I've been with Allstate since forever.  One moving violation about every 3-4 years, mostly speeding.   Currently two cars at total $750/6 months.

We are only comparing cost, not coverage.

So, it's a little unfair just to compare on that.

We do have a lot of insurance companies in Australia so we have plenty of price wars.

It's partly about age.  I'll be fucked once my kids start to drive.

But I have pretty good coverage, with a $500 deductible.

I raised 4 kids. When they got there drivers license my wife and I had them buy their own cars and have their own insurance. Reason being, I drive a corvette and a truck. My wife drives a BMW and a Ford Explorer. Not only would the insurance be astronomical if they where on our policy,  all of our property would be at risk if one of them where at fault in a serious accident. Our youngest child at 17 had just that. He ran a red light with his Dodge Charger and tee boned a car causing serious bodily injury. Fortunately he had a 100k insurance payable to that unfortunate person. My wife and I could have lost almost everything in a law suit.

The more you regulate the less you'll get of it.  Better to increase competition without decreasing public safety.
