- 20 litres of water per person (just over 5 gallons)
- 7 days worth of food, preferably nothing which requires cooking.
- 7 days worth of toilet paper and other sanitary supplies (toothpaste, tampons etc) per person.
- Shelter - modern tents are convenient, tarpaulins can be used in a pinch.
- Medical supplies - necessary medication, first aid kit, extra bandages etc.
- A torch & batteries (protip: a solar charger and rechargables are perfect)

Desirables:
- More of everything in the above list, especially food, water & toilet paper.
- Cooking supplies - BBQ, primus etc
- Extra clothing, especially socks & underwear.
- A radio & batteries (again, solar charger...some solar chargers also have fittings for your mobile phone)
- Practical, hardwearing footwear.
- A weapon of some sort. You probably won't need it, but bad stuff can and does happen.
- Shovels, axes, knives etc
- A lighter/matches.
- Blankets.
- Anything to keep you sane.
