Fuck that noise. The spouse can already use the GI Bill. There's absolutely no reason they need additional funding for job training etc. I fucking hate the soldiers that are always looking for a handout, whether it's faking a disability to receive a check for the rest of their life or any of the other million things they do to take advantage of the system. People have a nice rosy image of soldiers but a lot of them are scum just trying to skate through life as easily as possible. Military spouses are generally 10x worse too. Biggest leaches on the face of the planet. Most marry the soldier for his steady paycheck and health benefits.

Officers make a very handsome salary when you consider the benefits. In the DC area, a fresh 2LT gets about $1,700 a month from Uncle Sam to pay for housing. That's enough to pay for a 1 bedroom apartment and utilities in a nice part of town. With dependents it becomes about $2,000, still enough for a 2-bedroom.

My ROTC professor is going to be getting around $2300 a month once she marries her husband. So yeah, there is some major benefit pay to soldiers. I also recall from my ROTC orientation slideshow that healthcare is free for soldiers.

The pay is generally shit but there are a lot of benefits that come along with it including housing allowances, health benefits, help with getting a mortgage etc. To an 18, 19 or 20 year old coming out of a small town in middle America it beats working in their small town. I have just about zero respect for military wives because I've seen far too many people get fucked over by their spouse spending all their money or running off with their savings while they were deployed. My battalion had a 2/3rds divorce rate coming back from our deployment. My sergeants wife divorced him, spent all his money, took the kids, and moved back home and married someone else.

I know of a guy who cheated on his wife during basic. Told her, is no longer with her -but is still married to her so that she can get the free healthcare.

Us people? I didn't get married in the military. I was engaged but that ended while I was deployed. No big loss for me.

Most of the people getting married in the military do so with their high school or hometown sweethearts. They're 18, 19 or 20 years old and don't understand what a marriage is. Couple this with the fact that most people change dramatically between the ages of 18 and 22 and it's a recipe for failure. These are dumb kids from small towns that are experiencing freedom and the 'big city' for the first time. Most of them realize that the person they are with may have fit with them best when there was a small pool of mates to choose from but then they realize they can find someone more like them or whatever else it is that drives them to find someone else.

Best advice I can give anyone, especially those thinking about joining the military is to never marry young. It almost never works out.

U.S. military pay is low considering.. But the benefits that come along with it make it more then most entry level jobs.

Sure they might make 17k a year, but that's straight pay without living expenses. When you add everything up they're probably making somewhere around 45-50k per soldier.

17k + 5k health + 7k rent cost + 1000 car insurance + 10k food expenses. So yeah a military job even at the bottom is still pretty good.

Wooooaaaa... while I agree that there's too often a rose-tinted view of soldiers, police, and armed forces I don't know if I'd put it in as strong terms as you have. There's little to be gained in tarring such a huge diverse collection of people with one brush, some people will genuinely deserve and benefit from this program, and yes, many will exploit it, that's the way of the world. Saying soldiers and their wives are all just out for the money and the benefits is the same as somebody accusing all soldiers of being heartless baby-killers. At the end of the day it is still more money being thrown into the bottomless pit that is Middle Eastern conflict... should've stayed at home lads.
