(you 1): wat^
(you 2): nm.
(you 1): y r u ug?
(you 2): stfu!
you 1): y?
(you 2): b/c!
(you 1): k... w/e

Ok, everyone knows that they love to abbreviate things, especially gamers. Possibly because it allows us more time to play, or that some of us are lazy... Well, you know as well as I do that almost everyone does it.

1. Names

ex: Mr. Widdim -> Wid, Widdim, Widdims, Wids

2. Maps

ex: Strike at Karkand -> Kark, Strike
ex: Gulf of Oman -> Oman, Gulf

3. Games

ex: Battlefield 2 -> BF2
ex: Counter-Strike: Source -> CSS, cs

4. Any thing that is more than 2 letters long

ex: at -> @
ex: rolling on the floor laughing -> rofl
ex: whats up? wat^

I mean, people have so many abbreviations that I can hardly understand what they are saying...

wid gj kark nxt rnd!!! gg!!! nxt rnd! next rnd! ya!

Maybe we should just speak in shorthand...

what do you think?

Just noticed the savage hypocracy of you using the term 'lol' in a thread about the overuse of abbreveations.

That made me roffle.

(Technically, roffle is a word. At least it should be. It makes me roffle.)

I can understand the shortening of names though. Especially in Battlefield 2 and Battlefield Special Forces it adds to the feel of the game. I had some friends who served in the United States Army and they used shortened forms of the names of their fellow soldiers as some kind of nickname and to be able to adress them faster in combat situations. This should not be mistaken for the callsigns that are used.
I sometimes have trouble with the short forms written in the chat though, I guess I am out of the loop when it comes to internet shorthand

What I do not understand is, why would a word that is only two letters long be shortened as well? Like "ok" shortened to "k". Or even stranger, why use "kk" instead of "ok"? It is not even shorter, since it has two letters as well, and the "o" and the "k" are pretty close together on the keyboard.

Well, I guess I could have used far less letters and lines to write all the above, like:

I understand shortening names, ppl in teh Army do it 2, adds to realism of BF2 + BF:SF
RL friends do it for a nick.
But wtf bout ok = k/kk?

aka: i do it too

you say "(Technically, roffle is a word. At least it should be. It makes me roffle.)"

aka. roffle is rofl waffle abbreviated

honestly... LETS GO TO SCHOOL AND LEARN TO READ!

or would you like me to write in 1337? or in someother language??????

This is one of those arguments where each side is arguing their case, but not against each other.

So here, have a cookie. I'm eating one too. It's delicious.
