Well, you would rather live in a world where you're living off the government teet and they have to hold your hand through life? I know you're from cali and all but damn man, I thought you got enough of that bs in the armyeleven bravo wrote:

Government should have minimal impact on our daily lives.

Why not? You have the potential to have much more say and control over what goes on in your state than you have at the federal level. Well, maybe not in your state, but the rest of us aren't as beholden to special interest fringe groupseleven bravo wrote:

Why do you think we think that everything in Europe is awesome? We don't. Try reading some of our own press. By extension you must think that we think that everything in America is shit. We don't. If it was I probably wouldn't have visited the place on holiday.

Well you can take it from me that I personally don't think everything we do in Europe is awesome. And I was responding to lowing.11 Bravo wrote:

Cams actually pretty evenhanded about it. Some others? Not so much. He isn't one I'd peg as a nationalist or anything like that.11 Bravo wrote:

I think Europeans think, that they hold higher moral ground than the US, that they look down on America from a perch. Europeans think we are all fat lazy and stupid, while they consider themselves sophisticated, refined and intellectually superior.CameronPoe wrote:

My only problem is, after visiting Germany, I am not sure they are wrong
At least we try and do right by the world, and when we fuck up, Europe spares no expense to voice their opinion about it, yet they hardly ever take the lead in any action if they show up at all that is. You can not fuck up if you do not try, and Europe plays that roll perfectly.

The pendulum that is the USA will keep on gaining momentum, swinging wildly to the left and the right. W Bush, then Obama is the result of that particular disaster, Palin will probably be the result of Obama being gay, then we're all fucked, without lube.
Palin doesn't have a prayer of winning if she was put up by the Republicans. She would lose every single state (except maybe Texas) with high electoral college votes.Mekstizzle wrote:

Boston is pretty liberal, but even Massachusetts has a significant amount of conservatives or right-leaning people.
It was the independent voters that put him over the top, according to what I've read...many of whom voted for Obama, Kerry, and Kennedy in the past. That's not insignificant, either.

"Unenrolled" equals the number of people that are registered to vote but do not register with any party.
50%? Dayum. What have the Republicans been doing the last 30-40 years?

Massachusetts is often seen as liberal because of the low Republican numbers among the electorate. While it is a liberal state compared to many areas (like the South and the very conservative rural states of the West), it's actually closer to the middle of the road than a lot of people realize.Spark wrote:

Conservatives in New England tend to be more libertarian in nature, because social conservatism is generally seen as ignorant in much of that region. Economic conservatism still has a lot of appeal in New England (especially in New Hampshire).
You wouldn't want to live here. Almost everyone is sick and tired of state government incompetency and want the federal government to at least step in, if not take over. There are even loud noises calling for the removal of states entirely.JohnG@lt wrote:

I prefer state rule because if you don't like the policies in one state, you can just move to one that you do like. If the federal government is all encompassing and you end up with a government and policies you can not tolerate, what recourse is there? It's not realistic to pick up and move to another country.Spark wrote:

I think the difference here is that Australian politics is not nearly as motivated by the divisive ideological debates that drive American politics. Here it's A. whose policies make more sense (though both sides usually have the same goals and their policies have similar structure, but are different in direction) and B. who is more competent. Things like big government vs. small government - no one really gives a shit.JohnG@lt wrote:

Hang on, I read what was written on the filibuster again. Are you serious? Could it be feasible that a party having lost the general election by a considerable margin could concievably block the entire function of the government by filibuster? And then force the president to do it all himself?

the scumbag politicians haven't got much of anything done with their radical agenda...
Only because they want to get re-elected... it's not the republicans completely... republicans have been blocked out of most discussions.
The dems could pass what they like but it would be at their own peril... which will happen in Nov.
Obama is worse than even i imagined... He is a good speaker and thats about it...
He is clearly over his head and his falling polls reflect that.
Blaming Bush is all he really does... and the people are tired of it.
They need jobs... not increased taxes and behind closed doors health care
and crap and tax...
That being said... i hope that the conservatives step up and do the right things in Nov...
if not... then F them too.
