I see it discussed and brought up everywhere. A good portion of the people in this country(The U.S.A.) are starting to realize that we're not the great country that we once where.

Where the Earth Quake in Haiti is a horrible tragedy, I'm seeing an outpouring of voices cry "fix our home first". After about 10 years in the shitter maybe our Powers that Be will start working on making a better America. The worst that can happen is that at least people are opening their eyes to our in house problems.

It's a start.

After WWII things were very good here. We've just slowly let them drift away by concerning our self with way to many battles against Communism and world domination.

No it's just that there's a recession/bad economy going on right now, plus lots of wasteful spending, plus the fact that some people will be grumbling whether it's all worth it giving all that money to Haiti

no surprise you get shit like this going on. At the end of the day, the aid to Haiti is small change for the world, but it can make a big difference. Dare I say it, it's a good thing the Haitian government/military is out of action for the most part and that the UN/US is running the country, maybe that'll mean the aid won't end up in swiss bank accounts.

Our whole infrastructure in this country is falling apart. We're not fortunate like England with alot of people in a smaller country. We have a giant country that really needs more money and effort put into maintaining it. Like the Tappen Zee Bridge is almost at it's expiration date, most of our road systems are falling apart and all we're doing is patching it.

Yeah, nostalgia has a nasty habit of ignoring the bad things of yesteryear.

Whatever the case, I think intervening in Haiti is a practical thing to do because it's so geographically close to us.  Invading Iraq was much more disputable in its relevance because of how far away it is from us.  With Haiti, they're simply too close to ignore.

Helping Haiti helps us avoid problems that are similar to the ones we experienced when Cuba descended into chaos.  We ended up with a lot of refugees entering our country, some of whom were part of organized crime.  With Haiti, the last thing we want is more of that sort of thing, so we have to help them in their own country.

We could also stand to gain a lot from helping Mexico, so that their people don't have to come here to find work.  Ideally, we should be able to help create an environment there more conducive to job growth and a higher quality of life.

I'm talking about structurally sound. It's awesome running around fixing and working on other peoples problems when we're falling apart ourselves.

I didn't realizes how bad it was intill I watch this program on the history channel. I could probably find it on a stream site if anyone wants me to look it up

http://www.history.com/shows.do?action= … eId=452430

But really minus giving them Clean water and medical what is the money we donate really going to go too? They're going to get the same help regardless.

Our infrastructures do need some improvements, but that's largely the realm of state governments.  Some of these structures are federal in jurisdiction, but a lot of them aren't.

watch that program its not "some" improvements. We're in trouble and with the World debt we hold, we'll be sunk soon enough.

Governments have an incredible ability to soak up debt.  If you look at debt as a percentage of GDP, we're not that badly off.  Not that trillions in debt is good, but we won't be descending into anarchy that soon.

Their support for slavery and such was very wrong, but that does not discredit everything they did.

er... no.  Sorry.  Adams never owned a slave.  Also a many believed such as Washington that it was wrong and would divide the country.  The founding fathers recognized the fact that their ideals were radical and new.  Look at how the US was formed.  They recognized that ideals change and the constitution needed to be able to change with the times.

Changes?

I blame the baby boomers for everything that's wrong with this country. Curse their self centered selfish generation.

They were born with silver spoons. They partied in the sixties and we got harsh drugs laws and a federal 21 drinking age.
They partied even harder in the 1970s with cocaine, and we ended up with aids and crack.
They inherited a great infrastructure, but when it came their turn to pay taxes for maintenance, they refused, and now we have crumbling infrastructure. Where is their great infrastructure achievement for their generation?
They got cheap and in some cases free post secondary education, tax funded of course, but not now, no... because now they would have had to pay for it. Its so bad that we don't even have enough nurses to take care of the boomers own elderly parents.
They all want to retire at age 55, in fact the feel entitled to retire at 55 and what did they do? They bloated the stock market up like a rotting cow, hoping that it wouldn't burst before they all retired, and now its exploded and we're left to pay for their greed.
They all want medicare and social security, but of course did not want to pay taxes to ensure that the fund had enough money, instead, again they wanted lower taxes and had the government skim the money out of social security. So they got their low taxes but of course like selfish children they still want social security... and their solution is that all of us to pay for them

Its like the Aesop fable of the god dam grasshopper and the ant, they are the grasshoppers and we're the ants. They fiddled, farted, partied, crapped all over the place and its going to be our job to clean up their messes. Welcome to the service sector, "would you like to super-size your load with a McDepends?"

If its one reason why I was glad to see PBO be elected, it was because he is the first post baby boomer to be elected, which IMO is one reason why some many white hairs show up at Tea parties and stuff, its because they are the selfish generation and they are greedy POS and don't want to held accountable... surprise surprise. They want to retire and leave us all with the bills.

Fact is, is that after we fix the roads and the bridges and the other infrastructure, bring sanity back to drug laws, properly fund education, fix the stock market, re-float medicare and social security, and cure aids... I really doubt that we will have anything left in our wallets to build our futures. That in a nutshell is baby-boomer socialism, they party and we're their servants picking up the tab and cleaning up after them. It is quite possible that the boomer generation may have dug a hole so deep that will take a few generations to fix it. Too bad we can't tell them all to grow the F up and fix it before they check out.... or better yet make them fix it. That's change I could believe in. Unfortunately the tides of change are still outflowing like before a tsunami as we get deeper in debt, then will come the financial tidal waves.

that was a great post, but I don't know why you bring up socialism. The times you were referring to were not a time of socialism for the US. A time of rampant capitalism maybe. The teabaggers are white haired old stiffs, not old socialists. Your presidents from the baby boomer generation, notably the Bushes, and of course Clinton (Hey he didn't fuckin inhale alright??!) were far from old peace hippies but aggressive free-market, expansionist capitalists. So greast post, but for Gods sake don't bother bringing up this evil of 'socialism' again!

Yep, they fucked over later generations with their shortsightedness, and now they want to suck us dry via Social Security and Medicare.

But oh...  we can't have socialized medicine for the young.  That would be too fair to implement.

Thankfully, the boomers in Canada weren't such assholes and actually planned things out right for their younger generations.
