Pass notes No 2,710: The Tea Party movement

A collection of tax-hating gun nuts and single-issue cranks who bombard the White House with teabags

Age: Not yet a year old.

Appearance: Annual Picnic for the Disgruntled.

What is it? A loose coalition of disaffected American conservatives gathering sporadically to protest big government generally, President Obama specifically and socialism, vaguely. Initially they objected to the government's fiscal stimulus package, but the movement has grown to encompass an amorphous range of gripes both national and local.

When? Originally the idea was to mount nationwide protests on Independence Day – 4 July – but most events coalesced around 15 April, the deadline for filing US income tax returns.

What's it got to do with tea? The name echoes a seminal moment in American history when colonists chucked a shipment of tea into Boston Harbour, in protest against taxation by the Crown without the consent of their own elected representatives.

Does the Tea Party movement go in for similar direct action? They have a form of protest called teabagging – putting a teabag in an envelope and sending it to the White House – that unfortunately shares a name with a sexual practice which you'll have to look up on the internet.

I may disagree with their politics, but if it's a genuine grassroots movement who am I to say they're a bunch of morons? Critics contend it's merely an "astroturf" movement, funded by rightwing thinktanks and heavily promoted by conservative media outlets such as Fox News, masquerading as a populist uprising.

Has it got a future? In February the first Tea Party National Convention is being held in Nashville, with the aim of uniting disparate organisations under one ideological banner.

What sort of person could unite this rag-tag collection of tax-hating gun nuts and single-issue cranks? Sarah Palin will be the keynote speaker.

Do say: "OBAMA: SOCIALIST PIG" or, alternatively, "OBAMA = HITLER"

Don't say: "Mine's milk, no sugar, thanks."

I am all for a balanced budget, please explain how going deeper in debt with money we already do not have, to ever increase leeching of social programs that are already abused will accomplish a balanced budget.

Because going down the good ol road after Bush would have made it all so much better right?

No matter if Obama or McCain had won the election something had to be done way differently and Obama has got the pair of balls to risk his second term for the greater good, a better and cheaper healthcare has a higher starting price but will save you money in the long run ...

I dont expect you to understand this when even hard core economists doesn't ...

Typical, this isn't about Bush. By the way, I was not for the Bush bailouts and spending either. I do however consider the greater good as fighting terrorism, taking that fight to them and keeping the US free from attacks. A perfect record by the way, only t obe lost after Obama took office.

Yeah yer right, absolutely no one understands your pov regsarding health care not even the experts, might be a reason

wot is teh tea-party movement?
Its slack-jawed morons trying to embiggen themselves through historical reference and to scare the electorate into voting them into office so they can make money for themselves at the expense of the American people.

Awesome record, apart from er 9/11 itself, and er how many thousand combat deaths and trillions of dollars spent?

Never been to a tea party rally, and don't think I ever will. Some are libertarians, some are neocons angry because a democrat is president, and some I don't know. The tea party movement would have much more credibility if they began their tirades under Bush.

@ the OP: What a ridiculously uninformed (or not), slanted (probably intentionally) piece of tripe.

Overall, this:

The tea party movement would have much more credibility if they began their tirades under Bush.
Although, I think there were some, IIRC. Just not nearly the same amount. Started with the bailout talk, I think. Should've started much, much sooner.

A lot of spending and government expansion under Bush, not a whole lot of people seemed to mind. Might have to do more with the boom time if anything.

The obviousness of the joke is not so obvious when you look at the posting history of many people with regard to left/right politics here. Particularly when you look at ROW vs. US or vice versa.

That's why alot of people think these protesters aren't worth much. You already said it. They don't actually care about the values they preach, they just don't want things to happen the way they don't want it to. It's pretty awful really. That mentality of being a patriot only when it suits you is nothing new to the history of the world though.

Jeez it's pretty obvious if you look at the title, the fact I prefaced it with 'lawls', and the generally flippant tone of the post. Just trying to lighten shit up. A point you singularly failed to comprehend, judging by you calling it "a ridiculously uninformed (or not), slanted (probably intentionally) piece of tripe."

I mean, teabagging? WTF? That didn't get a laugh?? I fuckin lol'd I tell ya.

In any case I think you'll find that the information contained within the OP pursuant to the 'tea party movement' is essentially factually correct, and not a piece of tripe, as you so elegantly put it. Actually, now I think about it, perhaps you'd like to point out which parts of the OP are factually incorrect?

As for ROW vs USA, that's you making that up, not me.

The shock of the national deficit quadrupling (I think) in less than one year motivated a lot of people who should've been motivated a lot earlier. You might have overlooked that part.

Made me laugh a little, but to be honest it makes me more uncomfortable than anything. I mean, I t-bagged people on BF2 every chance I got. I certainly know the sexual connotation, so 't-bagging' members of congress does seem strange.

Teabaggers wasn't what they were originally called. It was a label given to them by MSNBC that was meant to marginalize them. Instead of backing down because they were being made fun of they embraced the term and threw it back in the faces of the left wingers.

Yes, many of them are idiots but the basic premise of the movement is to stop all the wasteful and excessive spending done by our government. I'd say that's rather noble.

You're right, they poke their fun at them and try to make them all look foolish.

What's with the guy in the video? What compelling argument is he talking about? Those t-baggers are keeping the gov more honest than Anderson Cooper.

fair enough, but it IS quite funny isn't it? I mean, only on this forum (or any other gaming site), and yeah slightly juvenile but I can just imagine them holding up placards - 'teabaggers unite!'. I mean, it's amusing, not because they're also extremist...

For once I wasn't even trying to be rude

what makes you think they are extremists? What acts of extremities have they committed? I mean other than protest stealing from them.

They are calling themselves the teabaggers NOT the teabaggees. A teabagger is far more in control than the one getting teabagged. So maybe they know exactly what they are calling themselves.
