Doubtfull.

I can play baseball, and basketball and football and hockey.
Can you play in MLB, the NBA or the NHL successfully? I guarantee every single person in those leagues would be a successful firefighter.
Apparently you aren't aware of what it takes to be a firefighter.
I'm well aware. I had to go to firefighting school for college.

Does your same logic apply for being in the Infantry in combat?

Or being a Cop in downtown New York City.  Yeah sure he's 6'6" and 430 lbs of solid muscle, but does he know when to use words and not his pepper spray?

Nope.  Still doesn't work like that.

Bill Gates really isn't worth what he holds in assets, because he never would be where he is today without faithful workers under him.  If the market really paid people according to their worth, then Gates would only be paid slightly more than the other employees he shared leadership duties with, who in turn, would be paid only slightly more than the people they managed.

Individually, it's rare to find someone who's actually worth an amazing amount.

In a system as you suggest, Stephen Hawking would be one of the wealthiest people on the planet.

and that is just school.

When you've actually been inside a burning building with your bunker gear starting to singe looking for a little girl with flames all around, then you can truly tell me you know what it takes.

You're not talking about terribly demanding jobs on an intellectual level you know. Being a cop or a firefighter is not rocket science by any stretch of the imagination which means a very large number of people qualify as long as they are in shape. Whenever the police academy opens here they have a surplus of applicants that reaches into the thousands. Sure, not all of them would be good cops but that large potential supply depresses the wages of police officers.

Most paramedics I know aren't all that bright. They generally liked the flashing lights but weren't smart enough for med school. Gross generalization yes.

Gross Generalization.

Most Baseball players I know of couldn't tell me how many quarters are in a dollar.

John they don't let just any boor into (good) police forces. I know that Fairfax County PD (Virginia) require a bachelor's degree or experience in the military with an honorable discharge. They might get lots of applicants, I don't know, but that doesn't mean they all get in.

They still have a large pool to choose from. Large supply means low demand and low pay.

An aeronautical engineer is paid very well because there is a small supply and a large demand for their services.

And the sky is blue.

Granted I only read this page and page 3, but I'm not sure what we're arguing. It went from Paris Hilton to firefighters in the blink of an eye.

That arguement is FLAWED, going back to the MLB,NFL,NBA.  Rosters, teams, colleges, They have a greater "applicant" pool and a Greater demand.

Aussiereaper doesn't believe that a persons wages reflect that persons value to society.

And less people that can fill the job. There are a total of 1350 people on MLB rosters pulling applicants from all over the world.

oh

they don't, IMO

Any idiot can be a garbageman, and the job doesn't pay well, but I find a garbageman far more valuable than Paris Hilton. Hilton provides some cheap laughs for the semi-catatonic masses; the garbagemen keep our cities from being full of shit.

To quote Fight Club, "Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not... fuck with us."

Without these low-paid people, our society would either crumble or at the very least become unstable.

Back on healthcare pl0x.

Well as seven stated, state sponsored health care would be the most beneficial, as there is less bureaucracy. Hell it creates competition amongst states as well for quality of life.

I agree that individual's should be responsible for their own health, but from what I hear in America it is a employer based system. They should do shit like Taiwan where the company pays for 60%, gov 30% and 10% from yourself. Providing healthcare saves a shit load of unnecessary bureaucracy from insurance companies for the both doctor and patient.

Public insurance doesn't mean "OH NO GOVERNMENT IS TAKING MAH FREEDOMS!" You still have the choice of a premium private health insurance with better care etc. But primary healthcare should be taken care of by the gov on a state level. In my opinion the government's job is to protect the people, physically and health wise.

Not really, because they're all jobs that people can do themselves but choose not to. I can cook my own meals, drive my own trash to the dump, switchboards are automated and I can drive myself to the hospital. Paris Hilton has no intrinsic value, she doesn't add anything tangible to society but she does entertain people and apparently people are willing to spend plenty of money on entertainment or we wouldn't have a movie or tv or book industry.

I'd rather dump the employer based system of health insurance, have that money returned to the individual in increased wages and have the individual buy their own insurance plans. It would force health insurance companies to be more competitive when they have more customers.

When I was under a County insurance policy, for just myself and my son it was 650 a month, on a 1600 paycheck.

You can, but people choose not to. And I guarantee you that if tomorrow all these "worthless" people disappeared, there would be major chaos.

It'd be interesting to compare pre-Katrina NOLA to post-Katrina. See if there are less 'worthless' people there. See if there's any correlation between that and the quality of life.

edit: Back to healthcare yes. Get rid of this pre-existing condition bullshit that makes it nearly impossible to get insurance, and open up insurance companies across state lines. If I have a great plan and then move to another state, I should be able to keep that plan.
