Some of the few sci-fi games that are able go beyond space opera standards, and actually warrant the label science fiction. _{Pity Dues Ex has the totally implausible nano-tech included, or it would come under that heading too.}

Half Life wins for immersion and detail as far as the back-story and universe go. Having the main protagonist a mute is kinda shite as far as the central plot goes, but works better than having him clutter up the game with useless jibba-jabba.
