Ok, watched it for the second time yesterday, and I still don't fucking get it.

When Matt Damon returns to his room, and is shot by Mark Wahlberg, why is he shot? My first thought it revenge kill, but, umm, wtf. I mean, he lost him his job, but killing him would be extreme.

Then, in the absolutely last scene, there is a rat running past the screen. This is what mindfucks me. Is Wahlberg a rat? Or is it just  that Damon's wife rattet him out to Wahlberg? And if so, why not just arrest him?

What did Damon do when he went to a different room to check Di Caprios file?

Revenge kill; it's not extreme given the circumstances. It's what rats and two-timers deserve. Damon couldn't be arrested because his connections would allow him to get the charges dropped or he wouldn't spend time in jail or whatever. Wahlberg's character is dirty and below the law, but inside he believes in justice and knew what he had to do.

I'm not sure about Damon's wife ratting him out or whatever, but I think you're reading too much into it. Or I guess it's just open to interpretation. What I got from the rat at the end was the simple message: rats are everywhere. (i.e. be careful who you trust; which was one of the themes of the movie).

Honestly though, this film wasn't all that great, at least not compared to other Scorsese works. His Oscar was deserved, but not for this picture. There are much better movies to spend time analyzing.

Right, I'll agree on that.

On the wife thing, it was just the way she kept glancing up at Damon during the funural, crying. My guess is that Di Caprios letter to her told her all about Damons work, and to report it to Wahlberg, who, to me, was the only guy he trusted asside from Damon's girl. Di Caprio wanted  justice, and he knew the only guy who had the determination to do it, and who he knew was a legit "good-guy" (thus not putting the girl in danger) was Wahlberg.

I think she was mainly disappointed in Damon. She trusted him, and thought he was someone who he wasn't. I don't think she would go as far as vengeance though, so I doubt she ratted him out to Wahlberg (I don't think she even knew Wahlberg anyway).

As for the letter, I don't think it had instructions to go to Wahlberg or anything that detailed. I think it was just telling her about his (DiCaprio's) exploits as well as Damon's.

The last time I saw this movie was 6-8 months ago, though, so I should go back and watch it again to refresh my memory.

The rat was just put in there for symbolism since the three main characters were all rats.

Damon was the rat. But so too was DeCaprio.

Walberg thought Damon was responsible for his friends death, hence the revenge kill.

The rat is symbolic.

Seriously it wasn't that hard to figure out.

That was one of my favorite scenes. Especially the part where he goes up to the dog and it's owner seems scared.

dicaprio gave that envelope with all the evidence against damon to damon's girlfriend.  i assumed she told wahlberg so he took care of damon.

This, also the rat is all about them being rats and i'm fairly sure its the same scene that the crime boss guy (jack nicholson? havent seen this film in ages) was drawing at the bar, with that big building with the pointy roof in it like i said, havent seen it in ages so i cant remember, quality film though.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

one thing that bothers me about this movie is how when matt damon tries to question the mother of the guy who stole those micro processors who was killed, the mother is very beligerent with him.  thats such bullshit, no neighborhood/culture/society/ghetto would the mother of a murder victim stay quiet if she knew anything.  complete bullshit.
