Well not quite, but they have crossed the border and taken control of a oil well.

The diplomatic and security standoff began late on Thursday when Iranian forces crossed into Iraq and seized the well that sits just over the border in the southern Maysan province. It was a dramatic display of the occasionally tense relations between the wary neighbours.

The takeover - which included planting an Iranian flag on the well - was met by protests from Baghdad and an emergency meeting of Iraq's national security council that denounced it as a gross violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
What are your thoughts on this? Personally I think that Iran has so many issues within its own borders that it is trying to start a war. I think they figure that if they can create a common enemy for the Iranian people that the people may get behind the govt. They seem to be desparate to start a fight with someone. I would think that the Iranian people may be a bit too smart for this, and will continue to erode the governments authority regardless.

Iraq invaded Iran in the 80s. And I think this is a storm in a teacup. Iran are as desperate to start a fight with someone as the drummer from Def Leppard is about cutting his remaining good arm off. If anything I'd say the group of solider who temporarily occupied the area are in for a hiding.

I bet Iran is going to light the well on fire before they cross back into their border.

$$$ down the drain for Iraq, and Iran is happy.

If its not a random attack by a group of disgruntled troops then it probably has some relation to the sanctions being considered on Iran's petroleum imports. They're going to have watch what they're doing because at the minute they seem to act without thinking, almost seeing how long they can poke a bear before it bites.

Ottoman Empire, so nominally Turkish.
