Should this man be able to fly on a plane?

Danger -- wide load!

Federal aviation authorities investigated an Internet photo showing a massively fat flier's flab oozing hazardously into the aisle of an American Airlines plane -- but said yesterday that before the flight took off, attendants decided to give the man two extra seats, apparently in line with safety rules.

Worried that the severely obese passenger would block the plane's aisle in an emergency, American cleared out the normal-sized guy in the adjacent seat by offering him a ticket on a later flight.

Then, the American crew assigned the fat man two more seats. "The passenger in this case had a whole row to himself," said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown.

The fat flier was buckled in the middle seat with a seat belt and one seat-belt extender -- to have given him two extenders would have violated safety rules.

The rules allowed the man to sit with the arms of his row's middle seat raised up, Brown said.

"There were no FAA rules violated," Brown said.
They should make bigger seats...gee wiz.

Wow, they should have kicked him off, not the skinny guy.

I wouldn't mind bigger seats Then I would have enough arm/shoulder room.

They should just make him pay for two seats.

They tried. I believe it was deemed discriminatory.

My main beef is the distance to the seats in front, my knees are always sticking into the seat in front me.

That's a load of bullshit. If he was just overweight but not damn near sedentary, I'd agree it was discriminatory... but this guy is a fucking boulder, and he DEFINITELY comprimises safety. In aviation, a good 75% percent of the things we learn is what to do if things go wrong and how to come out of them safely and unharmed. This man prevents those precautionary measures from being enacted if there were such an emergency.

I have nothing against the man because he's fat. It's his body and if this is the way he's chosen to take care of it, so be it. But when he puts others' lives in danger, that's where I draw the line.

Yeah, public seating of any sort is not very friendly to my frame. I'm 6'3" 240 lbs and I have the frame of an NFL linebacker Sitting in movie theater seats sucks, bus seats suck, plane seats suck, train seats suck. You name it and I have to squeeze myself in uncomfortably. I swear most of the design engineers are asians.

I've never been on a cruise ship but one of my former professors used to captain one of them. He used to tell horror stories about the safety drills that they were required to perform before starting the cruise. Apparently cruise ships attract more fatties looking for buffet lines and elderly people than anything else. Getting the fatties down the chutes to the lifeboats always ended in either injury or one of them getting stuck. Imagine that happening if the ship was sinking. It would cause hundreds of deaths.

If I was the guy kicked off and I was in no hurry I would have taken the later flight and maybe ask for a few more "free flights"

They're a safety concern as well (on cruise ships) but not nearly like on planes.

And here's a perfect example why: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_358

You have that guy on the plane... I bet several lives would've been lost.

Omg man I know the feeling. I'm built like a brix house up top too . Those seats are clearly made for girly men.

Seriously though. Try sitting in the stands at the swamp (Ben Hill Griffin stadium). I'm bigger than most, but not like uber bodybuilder big.  I have to almost turn completely sideways or its pressed skin on skin. Kinda ew in the Fl heat.

I was pissed off when I went to Citi Field over the summer. They made the seats even smaller than they were at Shea! $100 seats and I'm wedged in and so ridiculously uncomfortable that I spend half the game walking around the stadium instead. Maybe that's their thinking... if I'm walking I'm buying... So lame.

My gf on the other hand is quite comfy wherever she goes. She's 5'2"

I know the feeling. Stadiums are the first thing that came to mind. So incredibly uncomfortable.. not that anyone should be sitting at a college football game anyways. But if I threw my arms up fast I'd be taking some extra teeth home. If you saw the swamp irl you would never believe they put almost 90k people in there. It's smaller than Raymond James and RayJay seats 70k. I don't know how they get away with it.

I literally had to wedge my ass into my seat at Citi. I am not fat by any means.

sadly, the seats are designed to fit i think the 95th percentile of all passengers (90 somethingth anyway)

here it is, from my introduction to engineering book's aircraft project section:

EGR101 book wrote:

Keep in mind that each seated person requires a space roughly 24 inches wide, 50 inches high, and 40 inches long. This standard size person [...] comes from a government standard (Military Standard 1472), stands 6 feet 2 inches tall, and 95 percent of the population are this side or smaller.

No. Fat people smell, they shouldn't be allowed in a confined space like a plane.

He should be made to buy his own plane, or get shipped in a container.

Or in the event of an emergency he should be last off.

Having said that at the training course I went to in Detroit the 25 stone human pyramid was always first to the bagel counter during the breaks.
'OK break time' Vooom, there was a blur, and there he was.

So, in summary, I dunno.

I love being asian, plus the seats on current airplanes now suck! these so called "slouch seats" are fucking horrible how do you sleep on them? I miss the old lean back ones - best for 14 hour flights...
