Well.. he has been the sitting member in his electorate for longer than I have been alive (ie. 20+ years.. ) He commands an ultra-conservative older-persons vote and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon.

If you buy a game in Aus, it's cheaper to get it from overseas from the UK or US. Even with postage it's often cheaper. If it's single player it's really tempting to just d\l it instead.

Stupid classification board.
Handy if you're a PC or PS3 owner where region codes don't exist for games, but sux to be a X360 owner
They suck for so many reasons it isn't funny.

In general the generations before 1970 in this country are ultraconservative to the point of lunacy. Seriously, this country has a bad record when it comes to censorship. Go look at the list of books that were censored in the 50s and 60s, makes this look like peanuts.

Earlier this month, we discussed news that Sega's new Aliens vs. Predator video game had been refused classification in Australia, effectively banning it. After a scathing response from the developer saying they wouldn't censor the game, and later news that the classification scheme may be updated to include an R18+ rating, it now seems that the Classification Board has seen fit to give the game a green light after all.

Sega's Darren Macbeth told Kotaku, "We are particularly proud that the game will be released in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed whatsoever. This is a big win for Australian gamers. We applaud the Classification Review Board on making a decision that clearly considers the context of the game, and is in line with the modern expectations of reasonable Australians."
Well, well, well.

Free societies should never have a government organization deciding if something is banned or not due to content.

All media regulation of content should be purely private.

Our FCC is full of shit, but the Australian government's classification board is just fucked up.  I can't believe you guys haven't just abolished that mockery of free speech.

There already are limits.  Slander, libel, privacy, national security...  and...  demand.

There are laws already in place against false accusations and against violating the privacy of others.  There are also laws against revealing government secrets and such.

Last of all, the market in and of itself does a pretty good job of limiting content to what consumers are willing to accept.  There's no need for the FCC to get involved or for your classification boards to either, since explicit content often leads to consumer backlashes that regulate the market in a natural way rather than a coerced one.

I'm not normally an advocate of pure free market economics, but in the case of regulating content, the market actually does a good job with this without government intervention.

It's a shame about your current Government cause AUS is a pretty awesome place to live from what I've heard. Nice whether, nice women, not many undesirables, good immigration system, good firearms laws, English as first language, friendly people. My uncle lived there when he was younger, some family took him in and become a 2nd family to him as he did his apprenticeship. He's now some headshed manager at BAE.

Such a shame about the entertainment laws. It really, really is.

It may change soon though Jord. Theres a bit of background you need to know before you blame the govt for this. One atttourney general in one state is holding this up. The rest of the states are happy to allow this through ( R+ classification for games). The decision must be unanimous, therefore it cant go through. Which is a shame, but progress is being made.

Get rid of the unanimous part, and the problem is solved.
