Well I had to do all that shit again, but I managed to eventually find a save point after making my way back out of the sewers, but I still have to properly go through them. But at least I don't have to fight those two monsters anymore. I hate travelling through mazes, and that's what this sewer bit is, it's a mixture of puzzle and maze, and I hate that shit, so I'm putting off actually doing it unless I'm really bored

How do you not get bored at FF8.

I played it once and it was so god damn boring.

"Final Fantasy: Every Story Ranked Worst to Best"
8.Final Fantasy 8

I’ve been sitting here trying to find a way to summarize Final Fantasy 8’s basic storyline, and I honestly don’t know where to begin. I suppose that the “elevator pitch” for this game is that it follows a group of military students who soon find themselves battling ancient evils, but that doesn’t come close to capturing just how strange this game is.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Final Fantasy 8’s story. It’s the kind of “too weird to live, too rare to die” narrative that you don’t see a lot of in modern gaming, and it’s almost impossible to not respect it on its outlandishness alone. This game goes in directions that are not on any map.

However, when it comes to rankings, it has to be said that Final Fantasy 8’s story is fairly inconsistent and dragged down by some unlikable/unmemorable characters. It’s Final Fantasy’s weirdest (and sometimes most interesting) narrative hour, but not its best.
Spoiler pitch of the story: teenagers raised to be soldiers in a special youth military academy have to stop a time traveling witch from destroying the universe.

That's the story across 4 disc.

This was my first Final Fantasy so my expectations of the series is kind of warped. I loved the adventure literally across space and time. Hard to think of many one off stories that are that grand.

i liked that game when i played it. the giant god finishers. cool stuff.

that was also an era of video games where difficulty and puzzles were baked-in. you were on your own. that or you had to buy some huge coffee table sized ‘game guide’. casually googling anything didn’t really seem to exist in the PS2 era. games had mystery.

PS2 Era? FF8 was released in '99. '9o'S gAmE'

They still make those giant books for games.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/517XWHCWJ9L.jpg
The books they make now are hard cover "collector's edition" things. They give them a fancy cover, some art work and behind the scenes blah blah blah and what to do in the game. I bought one of the last Metal Gear Solid.

Amazon says I paid $22 for it but now they are selling it for $75. Collectors edition profit. I am almost Jeff Bezos.

you're right: it's a PS1 game. i must have had it for the PS1, then. i went PS1->N64->PS2. didn't own any consoles after that. missed PS3/Xbox360, etc.

In my lifetime...Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Playstation 1, Virtual Boy, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Playstation 2, Xbox, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. Only played the 360 once and sold it. The PS3 is still in use. I rarely ever play anything on it but it is a great BlueRay player.

I had a good childhood. Materially at least. That counts for a lot. Do you know how many kids are really poor in this country?

Really hoping that this one gets the same remake treatment as FFVII did, but of the three 3D PS1 FF games, VIII seems to have been the least popular, so I doubt we'll see it before IX gets a remake.  If they do remake it, the junction system needs to go or it's not even worth doing it.  It was incredibly confusing, and it was a chore to keep waiting and going back to the same areas over and over to collect more ammunition for your spells, rather than just having a standard mana counter.

The way to beat the junction system is to play a lot of the card game. Don't draw spells from enemies or draw points. Just play the card game forever and get everything you need that way. But of course that isn't a good solution.

It's been probably somewhere around 20 years since I progressed far enough into the game to play Triple Triad, but I do remember trying to card farm at some point just to refine them into items I needed.  It's interesting because as soon as I stumbled across Gwent in The Witcher 3, it immediately reminded me of this game's card game.  Apparently it was such a hit, that Square has since re-used it in other FF games too.

Triple Triad is really fun even if it turns into a grinding like you would a Pokemon game. You can buy Triple Triad decks on Etsy. I would have bought them but I don't want to collect more nerd shit.

That's close to my lifetime consoles, or former consoles, strike anything between GB Classic & DS, strike Xboxes. Granted later ones I bought myself.

The PS2 is pretty amazing. I don't know what prices became like but there was a window where you could get games for practically pennies.

I have two PS3s. One OG with a faulty drive, and one watered down one I got as basically a replacement blu-ray player. Now I have an int'l blu-ray deck and a 4k player sitting on top of a dvd/vcr combo.

A working OG PS3 that could play those PS1 games is one nerd thing I actually took with me to when I moved. I haven't played anything on it since Gundam awhile back though.

I wonder if there are any Chinese companies selling consoles that can play old video games like there are so many companies cramming Sega/NES emulators into Gameboy knock off cases. Those are cool too.

I've got a combo console, does Sega, SNES, and I think NES. Has a copy of Sonic 2 sticking out right now, not touched in years. You can get a lot of stuff on the Nintendo store and, weirdly, Steam.

I don't know what it is about social media and the news that makes dicking around on the phone more fun than sitting down and getting rings while as Knuckles the red uh hedgehog? I do think social media can be healthier than dumping hours into 90's consoles.

I forgot to add that I had a

To me, there isn't a whole lot that distinguishes phone games from portable consoles. A game is a game is a game. If we're going to talk about which is superior, at least I didn't have to be subjected to constant MTA ads while making rows of blocks disappear on Gameboy Tetris. I think the stipulation here though isn't so much the game, but that it's more "socially acceptable" to carry around a phone than a PSP "toy."

The main selling point of the Gamegear for me was its backlight. Never did get one.

I think all PS3s can play PS1 games, did you mean the initial ones that still came with the PS2 hardware on them?

This thing will play NES, SNES or Genesis games and people seem happy with it in the reviews.

I bought a PlayStation Classic and hacked it to run BleemSync(super easy to do) so it can load and play any PS1 ISO off a USB drive, but lots of Activision games don't have any sound on mine for some stupid reason and I can't be bothered to reset the whole thing's settings trying to fix it, so I've kind of given up on it for now.  Sucks because the pcsx ReARMed emulator on BleemSync plays Tenchu with much better performance than the default emulator or the original PS1 itself, but that's one of the ones that doesn't get any sound.

People in the group chat were literally arguing the merits of picking one up and displaying, at least hypothetically. I mostly kept my mouth shut.

I have a $10 drawing mannequin on my desk, but that doesn't count.
