The danger for Mr Abbott is that of the pair, Mr Turnbull is far better-read on the issue of climate change and carbon abatement; exhaustingly so.

Compare Mr Turnbull's performance here in a 7.30 Report interview in which he lectures Kerry O'Brien at length, with Tony Abbott's recent Lateline interview here, in which the now Opposition leader acknowledges that he has not read the IPCC report, has only started but not finished reading the sceptics' bible by Ian Plimer, and is not overly familiar with the detailed data from the often-cited Hadley Centre.
Reminder that Turnbull was Howard's last and best Environment Minister.

No jokes, Joyce is likely to be in the front bench. It hasn't been confirmed but it will shortly.

Here is where I usually go for the political stuff: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/

Tony Abbott is expected to parachute Barnaby Joyce into a frontbench role as finance spokesman this week and elevate Kevin Andrews to a social policy portfolio.

i use:
local paper
the australian, very slight conservative bias but generally excellent
ABC, very slight left bias but almost uniformly excellent

most all other journalism is rubbish.

Cheers guys. I would have thought to look at the ABC first.. shall check out The Australian as well. (edit: and Crikey as well)

So Joyce. While I'm not as attuned to the political scene as I should be, all I recall is that he's a complete nutjob.

Joyce is a wanker. He does a lot of work with the CLP Senator. Who's definitely a dickhead who doesn't do shit for his constituents.

Tony Abbott has returned Kevin Andrews, Bronwyn Bishop and Philip Ruddock to the coalition frontbench, unveiling a marked shift to the right in his first shadow ministry.

The three controversial Howard government-era ministers have been given key portfolios in Mr Abbott's new-look team.

As the face of welfare for the coalition, Mr Andrews will take on families, housing and human services and Ms Bishop, who was involved in the famous kerosene baths scandal as former ageing minister, will be responsible for seniors.

"I don't know anyone with more energy than Bronwyn Bishop and working with seniors, she will be one of them, as well as someone who is working for them," Mr Abbott told reporters.

Mr Ruddock will be the shadow cabinet secretary.

"All three of them in their own ways have been polarising, but they all have a lot to contribute," Mr Abbott said.

Conservative Eric Abetz will take over workplace relations, while Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce - Australia's best "retail politician" according to Mr Abbott - will join the frontbench in finance.

Treasurer Wayne Swan immediately called into question Senator Joyce's ability to commit to responsible financial management.

Nick Minchin, a key backroom player in the downfall of Malcolm Turnbull, will gain control of the important energy and resources portfolio.

Again, its disappointing these people spend their time squabbling, maneuvring, rewarding dubiou chums with positions of responsibility and punishing 'enemies' who are in the same party and were elected same as they were.

Its a bit like Abbott is trying to make the Liberals look like the Republican party. Ultra conservative right wingers and all. Since he only got in by one vote,  I think its a stretch to take his party so far to the right. I would say that a lot of his own party may not be comfortable with the direction it is going.
Apparently Abbott has been described politically as a love child of John Howard and Bronwyn Bishop ( who is now on the front bench) . Not sure what sick fuck made up that one.

Interestingly, The opposition have announced that they would bring in an ETS, but in 4 years or so. They want to wait for the US to bring one in first! Its a bit like saying that we cant do anything ourselves. I am not really liking the direction the opposition is going.

They are betting on the hope that the US doesn't bring in an ETS, so they won't have to.

Thought I would bring this to the Aussies attention.
Maybe the lobbying of the Governments for a R18+ category is working?
Source

ABC news wrote:

The Federal Government is asking people to share their views on whether an R18+ classification for computer games should be introduced.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said businesses and adult gamers have called on the Government to introduce the category for products to be restricted to customers over 18.

"I regularly receive representations from both industry and gamers seeking the introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games, as well from those opposed to its introduction," Mr O'Connor said in a statement.

Mr O'Connor stressed that neither he nor the Government had formed a view on whether the classification scheme should include an R18+ Classification for computer games.

Interested community members can register their views on the accompanying submission template by email, fax or post.
Even though it will probably be bogged down by red tape, it seems like progress. I suggest all gamers tell look at the discussion paper and tell friends to as well. Maybe we can find a way to by pass Atkinson.

We can, we all chip in about $300, and Fenris can go to his house, knock him off, get surgery and move to Sydney.

Green light to clean filter. Conroy will try and ram it through.

And then we'll see how much of an expensive, useless and impotent waste of time this thing is.

I cant believe this has raised its ugly head again. I thought it was dead in the water after the supposed failed trial. Yet its back again. I really hate child porn and violent porn, but what else will be bundled in with it? Labor takes a couple of steps forward, then does this.

Theres a good article on this  here: ABC news

ABC news wrote:

The legislation would require all service providers to ban refused classification (RC) material hosted on overseas servers. RC material includes child sex abuse, bestiality, sexual abuse and detailed instructions for crime or drug use.
Does that mean that normal common garden porn is blocked as well? According to the article above, apparently its not to hard to get around anyway, so really why bother. If the ban was just for items mentioned above, and it didnt slow down our internet speeds, then I would be basically in favour, but I cant see that happening.

Despite this, they wont get Greens votes in the senate either:

Greens wrote:

They say they will not support the legislation and they doubt it will become law any time soon.

"It looks very much to me as though this is still a solution in search of a problem," Greens Senator Scott Ludlam said.

"The test results themselves say that the filters will be able to be circumvented. So quite honestly I don't know why the Government is persisting with this policy."
If the Liberals stand against this then it will never get through senate. Having said that, we have a conservative Liberal leadership at the moment, and they just may be in favour of this!

Worst of it is, it will slow down your internet because even legitimate sites still have to get through their firewall.

Last time this came up, it seemed like Labor knew it was a shit policy, but used it to get Fieldings support with the Alcopops tax. Maybe they are doing it again to get his support for emissions trading. Only reason I say that is , Fielding is mad about this stuff, and Labor knows it cant get the internet filter  through the senate, so whats their angle? Maybe I'm just getting paranoid in my old age, and it is what it is.
