Ty, it's Abbott's way if removing another potential leadership challenge. He gives Turnbull the NBN to fight against, and now Bishop to chase after this win to nothing.

(notice Abbott does not make mention of it at all during question time)

The Liberal Party has nobody left to challenge him for the leadership because he assigns those who could to the worst possible tasks.

Who else is going to challenge Abbott? Pyne? Hockey? No chance.

Hockey has about as much ambition to challenge leadership as Costello.

So.... a few questions.

What are the major parties/factions in the Australian political system?

How different is your parliamentary system compared to, say, the UK?

Why should I care?  lol jk.  I like watching youtube videos of the UK parliament.  It's tons more entertaining than C-span.  I just never know what the hell is going on.

We have the two major parties, Labor (left leaning) and Liberal (conservative). The other minor parties are the Greens (left wing, environmental and socialist agendas) the Nationals (right wing, rural focussed party) as well as a few independents. There are other parties of course but they are minor at a federal level.

I can't comment on the UK parliamentary system as I don't know much about it. We have a federal election every three years iirc, with the party itself running with the party leader as their candidate as PM (selected by the party themselves). At the last election we were left with a hung parliament with Labor forming a minority government with the support of the one Green lower house siding with Labor (who already held government) along with a few independents. There was much controversy over our current PM (Julia Gillard) taking the job of former PM (Kevin Rudd) because he was ousted during his first time and was (and still is) by and large widely popular throughout Australia. Tony Abbott (leader of the Liberals, who are of course currently in opposition) is very unpopular as a leader, however the Liberal party is set to win the next election regardless due to Gillard's unpopularity. I'd say it's a fair bet to think that if Rudd became PM again Labor would stand a much better chance at next year's election, however he tried for a leadership spill earlier this year but he only got 1/3 of the vote in the party room, so he is now a back bencher.

I'm far from an expert and doubtless others on here (Ty and Spark immediately come to mind) could fill you in with much greater detail and clarity, but that's a rough outline.

Doubtful. I'd say we're all equally disappointed with both parties

I don't like the Democrats but can you really blame me for never even considering voting Republican?  Gun to your head, you guys would seriously consider voting for the "Liberal" party?

I'm just trying to gauge how crazy your conservatives are, is all

It's worth remembering that considering policies such as socialised healthcare, welfare, taxation, gun laws etc our conservative party would probably be considered leftist in the US lol.

That said, the current Liberal leader is simply unelectable.

It's ironic how the carbon tax he has vehemently opposed the entire time is actually more popular than he is

Australian conservatives aren't that crazy, conservatism or liberalism doesn't really come into it much.

Hypothetically I would happily vote Liberal if they got the fuck rid of Tony Abbott as their leader. If there was a better Coalition leadership I would probably vote out the Labor Gillard Government in favour of the Coalition. Could stand a Coalition Government. Couldn't stand an Abbott Prime Minister.

You kind of have to vote for the party that seems to have its shit sorted a little better than the other, both parties are so similar it's utterly pointless to make a decision on policy matters. Perfect example is the whole asylum seeker mess. Both parties wanted to process the immigrants offshore, they just got into a big ol' clusterfuck because they disagreed on where it should be.
https://resources2.news.com.au/images/2011/09/21/1226142/979914-110922-kudelka.jpg

Meanwhile the general public were mostly against both parties' "solutions" because they knew it was all bullshit anyway. And they were right.

And you can look at gay marriage so see how significant being liberal or conservative is. Julia Gillard is a union-loving unmarried atheist with no children. Tony Abbott is a hardcore fundamentalist Christian with a wife and three daughters. Can you guess which one is in support of gay marriage? That's right, neither of them.

So fuck 'em both. I'll pick the few MPs I think are decent and hope that whether they're in Government or Opposition they at least do their jobs while the egos butt heads over insignificant distractions and meaningless discrepancies.

Dear Australia,

Shut the fuck up about what Julia Gillard may or may not have done as a lawyer for Slater & Gordon when she was in her late 20s and early 30s. It's fucking tedious. I don't care. No-one but the Coalition cares. It is not a reason to call for a resignation. From what actual information there is it simply seems Gillard was used as a tool. That's all. If there's more information then fucking investigate it instead of coming to conclusions and calling for resignations before you even know what the fuck you're talking about.

Fuck fuck fuck I'm glad it's the end of the sitting year because if I had to listen to any more of this crap I would be violently attacking anything that moved.
I'd like to know if the PM is corrupt, has facilitated corruption, taken slush money, lied to Parliament and so on.

Its getting wearing but its fairly obvious the Coalition has the smoking gun - the various missing files - I guess, and is trying to get Labor to get rid of her for them.

Its obvious Gillard was up to no good and knew it then, and knows it now. It seems the unions were even more corrupt back then than now, and as a union apparatchik parachuted into a law firm (IIRC) she wouldn't have been oblivious.

She'll probably half wriggle out of it, Abbott will half prove it, Labor will dump her and/or lose the election anyway so meh really.
