Intentionally.

Interesting that the Coalition doesn't find Slipper's vote so disagreeable to repeat this embarrassment. I guess they don't find sexual deviancy as objectionable as involvement in a union scandal. I'm just surprised they're notclaiming if the Government accepts his vote they are morally bankrupt. If you're going to have obvious double standards you may as well go for broke.

Sexism is hardly trivial tbf, there's been some awful shit thrown around in the last two years.

Mind you, I'd rather we got back to more substantive issues sooner than later.

A page bitching about your version of Rush Limbaugh and another devoted to a guy that is a misogynist. Substitute that guy for our retard that believes women can control getting pregnant through willpower and we've got a party. I just find the outrage funny, that's all.

Well, that guy is on an express route to be the PM of this country, so it's not quite comparable...

It's also part of a long-running narrative, to be fair. The interesting thing is that Gillard herself has barely mentioned her gender and sexism issues herself (leaving it to others) before now. Yesterday might have been why. I see a lot of confected outrage in parliamentary politics, but I rarely see that (and frankly there's a good reason for it).

I do strongly suspect that it was the "dying of shame" line that really struck a nerve with her, though. Politics or no that would have been deeply cutting.

I genuinely find it fascinating that this speech has gone viral, though. And I find it odd that Gillard herself thinks that it's a good idea to be such a boring lawyerly technocrat 99% of the time when she actually is a naturally quite gifted political orator, but oh well. I don't judge her on how she speaks.

I didn't realize it was your PM that you were talking about, makes more sense now. She's a terrible public speaker btw. The hand gestures make her seem unsure of herself, and, I know I'm setting myself up for being called a sexist as well... but she came across as exceedingly bitchy in the video.

She has the right to be as bitchy as she likes after the horrid rubbish printed/said about her in the past two years. Remember, she's said basically nothing about it until now.

Good article, this. The link to the Overland blog makes quite an important point, too.

Good article that. Personally, I love the democratization that the media has been forced to undergo in the face of bloggers, online magazines and the like.

But there are others that have a less kindly view of the way the process has played out. This is a clip from an HBO show called The Newsroom which wishes it could take the country back to a time when people actually listened to and respected journalists:

Good speech, but completely full of shit imo.

If you knew the history of her and Abbott politically and publicly speaking (ie. Abbott's long history of mysoginist comments, Gillard basically never bringing it up or responding to things like this till now) it would make more sense to you Jay. I think a lot of people feel that Abbott has had this coming for a very long time. Just not in such a profound manner.

Well it's not all a good thing. Bloggers etc. simply don't have the resources to do the kind of investigative journalism - especially at a high-governmental or international level, though there are exceptions - that mainstream media sources can. It's a difficult issue.

Here's a nice speech on it. Long, and I know I do quote Turnbull a lot, but he does make the right points on this IMO.

Good article. There was an item in the Sydney Morning Herald today from Peter Hartcher, (mentioned in the Dunlop article,) about the PM's speech, criticising her for pandering to her base instead of addressing the real issue of sexism. I'm sorry? I saw the speech, I'm not so sure Hartcher did. He certainly hasn't captured what the general public feel about it, the only thing he wrote about, the only thing, was that the speech 'supported' Peter Slipper. Hartcher showed himself to be exactly the sort of daft-headed chucklefuck that are all too common in the media. The mainstream media has to compete against the modern media and many journalists are finding that they're not up to the challenge because they don't have any talent. They're not persuasive, they can't analyse and most of them don't know what the word objective means.

A complete and utter judgement failure on Hartcher's part, and I imagine the rest of his ilk too though I haven't read any of the others. Quite satisfying to see actually.

In reference to what he said to Tony Windsor: "Tony, I would do anything for this job. The only thing I wouldn't do is sell my arse, but I'd have to give serious thought to it", after yesterday now he effectively could have doubled his chances

Is this the beginning of the end for Abbott?

Abbott invisible, Turnbull welcomed in ACT election campaign

https://images.smh.com.au/2012/10/09/3699847/art729-invites-620x349.jpg
There is no public place for Tony Abbott in the Canberra Liberals' election campaign, but Mr Abbott's emerging leadership rival Malcolm Turnbull has been drafted in to help raise some funds.

Liberal supporters are being asked to fork out $950 for lunch with Mr Turnbull, the man Mr Abbott vanquished as federal leader three years ago, at Parliament House this week.

But for those with less expensive tastes, the opportunity to sip whisky with local deputy leader Brendan Smyth is available later today – for $500 per person.

This morning Labor supporters and Canberra corporate interests had breakfast with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Prime Minister Julia Gillard for $80 a plate, in what is expected to be Ms Gillard's only campaign appearance.

But Canberra Liberals' leader Zed Seselja, who has been asked to comment for this story, has ruled out several times inviting his federal leader to help with Mr Seselja's bid for power on October 20.

Instead, party members have been invited to pay $950, with the proceeds going into the Liberals' campaign, for lunch at Parliament House on Thursday with Mr Turnbull, who is being increasingly linked with leadership speculation.

Supporters have also been invited to a "whisky tasting adventure" hosted by Canberra Liberals' Deputy and whisky enthusiast Mr Smyth at the Liberals' national headquarters in Barton at 5pm today.

Attendees are promised "an exclusive whisky tasting experience with a special presentation," by Mr Smyth.

The Liberals have not responded to requests for comment today.

After her breakfast event this morning, Ms Gallagher taunted her opponent over his failure to invite Mr Abbott onto the campaign trail.

"It's no secret why they're not inviting Tony Abbott on their campaign and that's because he's a big threat to Canberra," the Chief Minster said.

"They don't want to be seen with him.

"Zed Seselja doesn't want to be seen as Abbott's man in Canberra and that's why he won't be welcome.

"It's not about what issues are important in the campaign, it's more about the fact they don't want to be aligned with Tony Abbott because he's not popular and if he gets into power he will destroy this joint."
