Alan Jones:

Mining boom isn't over by the way although that's going to be an increasingly popular mantra. The RBA said the expect the mining boom to end sometime next year but it's a stab in the dark. Really though there has been a slow-down in infrastructure production in China meaning less demand for Australian resources. This has led the major mining companies to act conservatively in terms of building new long-term projects. That doesn't mean the boom is over, it may have peaked but it's not over yet.

I'd be interested to know how many jobs are in mining and how many in mining infrastructure development. In that sense the boom is over.
On the plus side maybe mining companies will start returning money to shareholders, then again probably not.

Alan Jones loses his Merc

MERCEDES-BENZ will confiscate Alan Jones's $250,000 sponsored car, and has vowed to never again support the controversial broadcaster or his radio station 2GB.

The carmaker expressed its strong distaste at Jones's comment, revealed last week by The Sunday Telegraph, that Prime Minister Julia Gillard's father, John Gillard, "died of shame" because of "lies" told by his daughter.

"We want the car back, the deal is cancelled, it is over," Mercedes-Benz's corporate communications manager, David McCarthy, said.
If the car is not returned, Mercedes will send someone to repossess it.

Mercedes-Benz Australia-Pacific, owned by the Daimler Group, distanced itself from Jones and has cancelled all radio advertising.

The thing is, he's been spewing this shit for years.

MB and any other sponsor deserve to be ridiculed and tied to him, they sponsored him for years and should face the consequences of doing so.

It's not like when they first gave him the car they didn't know the sort of hateful and racist bigot that they decided would represent them.

I just think it's long overdue and just deserving that this is all panning out the way it is. I don't mean to gloat, but I'm not ashamed for feeling that way either.

Find some of the reaction to the sponsors' thing curious. I can see some merit in the idea that this is a mild suppression of free speech, but surely this is capitalism in action, working exactly as it's supposed to work?

Might be worth a separate thread.

He's a for-profit entertainer, not a journalist, so yeah, capitalism in action.

Absolutely right, he is just an entertainer on a for-profit radio network. If people don't want him their only option is to appeal to the financial backers who will still sponsor Jones if they think the investment is worth it. That is people's only option, to make it too costly for the network and the advertisers to keep him on the air.

Jones is complaining at the moment that the social media campaign against him and more importantly his advertisers amounts to bullying. He'd know I guess, though forgive me if I don't weep for him. But it's not. Not really. It's part of the system he bought into. And I don't think free speech enters into it. No-one's campaigning to have Jones gagged, they just don't want him to have his own radio show any more. Its not stopping Jones from writing columns or from speaking at Young Liberals events. People don't want him to have the considerable scope he currently enjoys.

Jones says people have the option to boycott his show. But people also have the right to boycott his advertisers. Jones, the great advocate of free speech, is getting a thorough lesson in it for once. Jones disapproves of people writing e-mails to his advertisers objecting to their supporting of his show - that's free speech you colossal twat. It's just that while some people have a radio show others have a keyboard.

His lack of self awareness is actually pretty funny at the moment as is his refusal to take any responsibility. As far as he is concerned he apologised so it's all over. Thing is he always apologises, and he always just goes back and starts another controversy which suggests to me that his apologies are about as genuine as Quade Cooper's sense of national pride. Never mind accusing others of bullying or hypocrisy, his parting comment the other day cracked me up. He was referring to the reports about what advertisers are doing in relation to his show, in particular the reports that Mercedes Benz is looking to take back his car. Jones denies this is happening and attempted to explain the deal between Mercedes and 2GB and why these reports had to be false.

He ended the segment by asking "Honestly, how many untruths can be told in order to achieve some kind of advantage?"

Not a bad idea for his show's new tagline.

Alan Jones' problem is that he has a tiny penis he can only use for raping babies.

Wow, I had no idea satire was so easy.

Hate campaigns by agitators in the community are almost as bad as hate campaigns by agitators in media/politics/business/unions etc.

Stop listening to his crappy show, don't buy products connected with the crappy show, it'll resolve itself in the end.

Anyone watch question time? I think Julia got out a lot of pent-up anger.

Fucking poor choice of words on the Slipper matter Tony. Imagine so soon after the Alan Jones fiasco deciding to say that the Government "should have already died of shame". Imbecile. He is pushing it way too much when he accuses the Government of shameful conduct in nominating Slipper for the Speaker role. The Nationals and Liberals have been supporting Slipper since the 80s. Abbott attended his wedding and spoke on his behalf when he was nominated as deputy speaker. He doesn't have a leg to stand on really. Add to that the dumbass comment...

Well Gillard had a lot to go on. She was fucking furious too, especially about the Jones-esque comment understandably - her voice was shaking.

I think Tony felt a bit foolish to be honest.

That was actually kind of unnerving, watching her get so angry. I mean, we see a lot of confected outrage and shouting in parliament - but I don't think this was one of those times. This seemed personal.

I wonder if it will mean anything though. I've long admired Abbott's ability to dodge the shit that's flung at him, deserved or not.

That will depend in no small measure on whether Gillard is, as I suspect, so irate that she would probably consider setting fire to a house if Abbott was inside it.

Interesting to see how this speech has gone semi-viral across the world. Also interesting to see the local media so breathtakingly miss the point.
