So what do you reckon, was Jenkins forced out? The general feeling is that someone like Anthony Albanese convinced him to step down for the good of the party, possibly because of the difficulties Labor had securing Adam Bandt's support for the Mining Tax and the way Bob Brown blatantly had them by the balls. Jenkins gave up the title, the office, the staff, the pay and the pension and for what? To become a backbencher? And yet he definitely is a loyal enough Labor man to take the hit for the good of the party. The only question that remains is that why Labor didn't do it sooner, especially because Slipper and even Oakeshott were possibilities for Speaker after the Federal Election.
It may make Julia Gillard's reputation as a cold-hearted backroom-dealing political userper stronger but you can't deny that tactically it's a very good move - whether it'll work in the long run or not is another matter.

Yeah, it's interesting. This article suggests Rudd was behind it:
I honestly don't know what to think at this stage.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-24/s … sh/3693148In this afternoon's rambunctious session of Parliament, the last for the year, Mr Slipper tossed out four Coalition MPs including Luke Simpkins, Peter Dutton, Tony Smith and George Christensen.
Just last week Mr Slipper held a school visit with foreign minister Kevin Rudd on the same day that John Howard launched the campaign of state LNP candidate John Connelly.
Mr Slipper said that was just a coincidence, but LNP president Bruce McIvor told Fairfax's Brisbane Times that Mr Rudd was behind the deal to install Mr Slipper as Speaker.
Neither Mr Rudd nor Mr Slipper have commented on that suggestion.
I honestly don't know what to think at this stage.

I don't know about Jenkins, but Slipper was apparently pretty much a given to lose his seat in the next election. It all seemed to work out pretty conveniently for Labor - I find it hard to believe it just happened on its own.
I wish Abbot would just shut the fuck up, every single thing I have heard him say in the last like year has been either totally wrong (read: any time he has actually spoken about specifics on climate change) or just contrary to what Labor is doing at the time. Even if I was the staunchest LNP supporter I don't see how I could take him seriously.

Yeah I agree. When Turnbull was leader he would agree sometimes and disagree other times (naturally so). This presents him as someone who is a thinker and already has his own set of policies and convictions, and if they happen to run parallel with the opposite side of the fence he's happy to run with it. Abbott's complete contrariness to ANYTHING the government does just comes across as being empty and short-sighted.TimmmmaaaaH wrote:

And lol @ people talking about Rudd again. There is actually a reason he was kicked out - he's an A-grade dickhead.
edit: the word on the street here is that Jenkins was genuinely pissed off at some of the policies the ALP is suggesting (gay marriage, uranium sales etc) and wanted to do something about it. whether that was incentive for him to make a jump, i'm not sure.

Off topic but where does Adelaide's 5AA radio station get their information from? Just heard a completely random news report about the NZ election. NZ has a national general election tomorrow - that much they got right - but the NZ First party is not polling nor tipped to take Government from Labour [sic] and Winston Peters is not going to be the PM.
For one we currently have a National Government, for two NZ First is not a major party and Winston Peters got kicked out of his seat at the last election with NZ First not even receiving enough of the vote for one seat. As for polling, National is currently polling very well and is likely to maintain Government.
What the fuck 5AA. That's like reporting that Bob Katter's Australian Party is likely to beat both Labor and the Coalition and form Government in Australia.

They're part of the 'questionable ethics' series of radio stations that feature such high upstanding presenters as Alan Jones and Howard Sattler.Dilbert_X wrote:

Listening to Tony Abbott on Howard Sattler's show at the moment. He's upset at the Gillard Government announcing the public service cuts that he has been campaigning for since the elections. Why? Fuck logic that's why.

Just get rid of Abbott, an empty space would be fine - and probably get better ratings than Gillard.

"We're all very sorry that we'll all be at least $50k richer, we really are, especially as we've been cutting jobs and spending. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it, it's all this independent body's fault and unfortunately we made their decision binding meaning Parliament can't refuse this awful awful recommendation. Our hands are tied, we're just going to have to bite the bullet and accept all this money."

For once a good article by Greg Sheridan about the total futility and counter-productiveness of the Afghan campaign in today's Australian.

A message to the Australian media:
Stop talking about the fucking boy who cocked up and ended up getting convicted on drugs charges in Bali. We know the story and it's fucking boring. The idiot got caught, the idiot got tried, the idiot got a minuscule sentence that he served in a week, the idiot came home. The amount we've heard about this non-event is fucking ridiculous and now that it's all fucking over can you just leave the little idiot the fuck alone. It's over, no-one wants to hear from the kid, we all know what happened and we all don't give a shit.
Shut.
The fuck.
Up.
