It's pretty transparent game-playing to be honest. The only reason the Government is seeking to change the Migration Act isn't because they necessarily believe the Malaysia deal is the right thing to do, they're doing it because it's an embarassing back-down if they don't pursue it. But it's an even more embarassing back-down if they fold and agree with the Coalition that Nauru is the best option in order to get the legislation passed. The Coalition is in an easy place here, since the Greens aren't going to help the Government with this one the Coalition can either force the Government into doing it's bidding and pursue the Nauru option, (which looks really bad for the Government,) or decide not to play ball so the amendments can't pass, (which looks really bad for the Government.) It's more likely that the Government will stop trying to push the amendments and blame the Coalition, (as they're already doing to a certain extent,) which will lead to the Coalition pointing out how much the Greens' decision not to back the Government showed that Bob Brown is the puppet master which will lead to renewed calls for a snap election. Meanwhile nothing will happen.

Yawn.

On a side note, anyone see that 'At Home with Julia' thing that got everyone all up in arms? I had to listen to Howard Sattler yesterday trying to be all self-righteous about it between complaining about CHOGM.

Nah I didn't see it, I don't watch tv. I've read on ABC news about it and frankly I think the social conservatives should just learn to get over it and focus on actual issues.

What I hope happens is that the amendments fail, the Government says that it's hands have been tied by the opp and moves back to onshore processing and we can forget this whole pathetic farce.

How many are really refugees and how many economic migrants?

90% of the world is a shithole, wanting to love somewhere better doesn't make people legitimate asylum seekers unfortunately.

Most of them get accepted, so I'd guess most of them.

Most asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat are legitimate refugees. If you're really worried about economic migrants you should stop immigration from New Zealand.

Two boats arrive. Julia Gillard blames Tony Abbott, Tony Abbott blames Julia Gillard. Brendan O'Connor blames the Coalition, Scott Morrison blames the Government. Wondering how long until MPs start using the old "I know you are but what am I?" argument.

tbh I've always found the political argument that government policy means more boats will arrive is fucking ludicrous. Most Australians don't even know what the policy is, how would people in Afghanistan know what Australian government policy is on asylum seekers?

Plus they set off some time ago.

I'm deeply disappointed with both parties on many issues, immigration/migration is just one of many...

Obvious set-up for an obvious bitch-fest by the Opposition.

Joe Hockey said today that "Australians expect that the tax summit will deliver immedate relief" in regard to tax cuts.

Really Joe? What gave you this idea? In all that I've heard about the tax summit, neither the experts and not the Government have suggested that there would be any immediate moves at all - let alone moves to immediately cut taxes.

See the thing is raising this as a matter is an obvious attempt to make Australians think that this is what they wanted so they empathise with the Opposition when they start bitching and moaning in a week or so. As if they didn't have enough to mean about regarding taxes alone. Mining, carbon and now just taxes. I suggest they don't start given that the Howard Government taxed far higher than the Gillard or Rudd Governments have, and Howard wasn't dealing with global economic uncertainty either.

You don't get to pick and choose where you go as a refugee, UN sets you up, you don't hop onto a boat.

by faaaaaaaaaaar the most efficient (ie. cheapest) to reduce emissions. assuming you want to ofc - which both sides of politics do on paper.

what benefit do we get from reducing emissions though. I mean really. Really.

in the short term, trade bonuses and the like because of the regulations going on around the place to make carbon trading a bigger part of trade reform.

longer term... well, i shouldn't need to explain that.
