When most of them devolve into Tony Abbott calling a failed censure motion anyway six minutes is probably all you need. Same shit over and over and over...

Edit: This crap with Craig Thomson is ridiculous, I have no idea what the Opposition is playing at. Yeah, Thomson is in a lot of shit at the moment but there are only allegations at this stage, police have only just started an investigation. They're piling on this issue like buzzards on roadkill and nothing has been proven. I understand Julia Gillard shutting down Question Time early if all it was going to be was all about an MP's possible misuse of an organisation's credit card. How is that relevent to the running of the country? If Thomson is found to have used the card on prostitutes then he'll get what's coming to him. Why are they jumping on this? Particularly when their own Liberal Senator Mary Jo Fisher is currently facing theft and assault charges.

It's a fucking circus.

That and Christopher Pyne yelling "Point of order! Mr Speaker! Point of order!"

This all just proves Abbott is as bereft of real ideas as Gillard.

Also, who is stupid enough to pay by credit card?

True actually, I didn't think of that. Be interesting to see what happens. Labor and Coalition have 72 apiece, Coalition has Katter and Labor has Oakeshott, Windsor, Wilkie and Bandt. Then there's the WA Nationals and that's pretty cross-bench but I would half-count them along with the Coalition.

So Labor has 76 and the Coalition 73... and a half. If Labor loses Thomson, (and it's not looking good for him,) I would guess John McNamara would win the by-election in Dobell, it was fairly close there. So that would mean Labor would have 75 and the Coalition would have 74. So the person who, in this scenario, would effectively run Australia would be...

...Tony Crook.

Labor can just offer the speaker role to a liberal likely to accept.

Or call a double dissolution and you get the chance of winning an election with a greater majority. I think Abbott would actually do worse come the next election, since he has offered nothing but negativity.

I was listening to John Morrison in NSW the other day and he was taking calls from the public about their opinions on the Convoy of No Confidence. The reaction was overwhelmingly against the protest's aims and against Abbott with his fear campaigns and negativity. So much so that a couple of Abbott supporters rang up to accuse Morrison of screening calls. The most common comment was "I don't particularly like the direction of the Gillard Government but there's absolutely no way I'd want to see Abbott in power." There was also a lot of support for Turnbull.

You're right, Abbott's not in as strong a position as he thinks.

Australia is lucky in that regard, (i.e. having preferable leadership alternatives.) New Zealand without John Key... Well there's Bill English on one side and he already proved himself to be a worthless party leader and there's Phil Goff on the other side and he's a washcloth. Everyone else is either inconsequential or doesn't want the job.

As do I. Labor are woeful communicators and utterly incompetent political operators, and their execution and implementation of policy does leave a lot to be desired at times, but the general thrust of their policy agenda is, I feel, a very good one.

At this point i'd take any half reasonable liberal MP over Abbott.

Killing QT yesterday may finally have been the spark 07 attack dog Gillard needs to wake the fuck up. Today she finally seems to be relishing laying into the opp, which is when she is at her best.

EDIT: And on the other side, Abbott without his censure motion looks pretty lame... some fairly softball questions on the Thomson matter, and now they've given up.

EDIT2: And now Gillard is bringing out one liners! Geez.

EDIT3: fuck me that was pathetic from the opp. Softball question, given up halfway through, then an incoherent string of questions with no strategy or tactics behind them at all. except some butter. and to cap it off they managed to ask a question so softball the answer was 10 seconds long. meanwhile i have NEVER seen gillard + the alp so fired up this term.

Does anyone really give a toss about who scored which point in question time?
Its schoolyard name-calling level, and irrelevant to the business of running the country.

This High Court ruling on the Malaysia solution has really stirred things up. It's strange, I never once heard anyone aside from Gillard and Bowen say anything positive about the Malaysian solution, it's like the Government thought it was a shit idea and just kind of shielded their eyes and waited for the inevitable "crunch" from when the thing went tits up. The Coalition was obviously speaking against it but they were ust doing it in their usual bitch-fest way, but from outside politics too no-one seemed to think it was a very good idea. More interesting is that polls have shown that most people are against off-shore processing but both sides of politics are pushing for it with the Greens the only ones advocating for processing in Australia.

And can you believe it, Tony Abbott is actually trying to be constructive and help the Government with fixing this mess. I partly blame myself as I've been sending his office constant "so-and-so thinks Tony is a negative fuckwit" messages from the media, I guess he's finally caught on.

I find it amusing in a deeply cynical/depressing kind of way that the only thing the two parties have even come close to working together on is how to best stop refugees from entering the country. I should be surprised but I cant think of anything that would show even a basic level of reason or logic to these lowest common denominator decisions.

Let's Play Math!

Arrivals: 600/month = 7200/year
New Start Allowance: $500/fortnight = $13,000/year

Cost per year to give every arrival New Start: $93,600,000

Number of employed people in Australia: 11,450,000
Average Australian pay: $38/hour

Estimated average amount of time each employee wastes talking about this, instead of doing their job: 15 minutes/week = 13 hours/year

Yearly cost of this stupid issue to the economy: 13 * 38 * 11,450,000 = $5,656,300,000

Conclusion: ALP and LNP both hate businesses.
Thought that was amusing. The 600/month is taken from a news story where it was phrased "600 people a month will flood into the country". Story also tells us all about how "onshore detention gives asylum seekers access to courts and delays possible deportation for years". The horror!

600/month is trivial, but without hard deterrence it would be 60,000/month or more. That would be a serious problem.

OTOH Skilled migrants typically bring $100-200,000 at least and don't get any assistance for the first two years.
