I understand that professional betting it risking large amounts on sure things but I still find it surprising that a person would risk 30 grand just for the chance of getting $450. At the minimum Australian wage how much work is that worth? Not even a week.

Yeah not even Hawke can help Kristina now. Interested to see just how badly NSW Labor gets thrashed. Basically their election campaign has been 'please don't give the Coalition too big a majority'.

We all knew it was coming, but holy shit.

30% swings. 30!

That's a THIRD of an electorate saying "well, I'm voting for someone else this time". Amazing. Shows you how volatile our elections can be too.

to be quite frank they'd have to be a monumental fuckup to be even half what the alp was in that last term.

although that's in context of course. this shit doesn't fly easily over here.

ow.

Get Keneally in the fed lower house asap imo. far too good a person to be languishing for decades in opposition.

Kristina Keneally's decision to step down as Labor leader has triggered a race to see who will replace her from the ALP's depleted ranks.... Outgoing deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt says she does not want Ms Keneally's job.

"I can't yet even say whether I'll even be in the Parliament," said Ms Tebbutt, referring to the tightly fought contest in her seat of Marrickville which remains too close to call.

Dont leaders of parties about to fail generally do a leadership change before getting thrashed in an election? It's not like Keneally didn't know it was coming. Might have been a good idea, her popularity was way down and the ALP would have won some support back by being proactive about it.

They had more than enough leadership changes tbh. Lot of respect for her from me, she fought a tough, tough, tough campaign to the bitter end.

On the plus side Labour is out.

On the minus side its a shot in the arm for Abbott, which in the long run is bad for the Libs.

I can't really see how Abbott could be given any credit for the win, though naturally he will claim some credit for it. Labor were doomed from the start, and rightly so (and I never vote Liberal).

I'd love it if the current allegations against the Qld LNP turn out to be true. Nothing against the LNP really but it'd just make the mess the Qld Coalition is in at the moment all that more fun.

whose fault is that though?

i agree that most state labor govts need a real hard thumping. probably not a 17-37% (seriously still wtf at that) thumping but a bit of a thumping nonetheless. far too corrupt and archaic for me. fed labor is different, i rate a lot of the labor ministers more than their shadow counterparts. except turnbull. nothing too much against conroy, he'd beat most of the shadow cabinet, but only tanner could match turnbull imo.

I wasn't trying to say it was anyone's fault but the (State) LNP. They've basically ambushed themselves every time they've looked like they might actually make some ground.

So what do you guys think about increase military spending in Australia? With America likely to decline in power over the foreseeable future, Australia is going to have to take a more active role in defending itself. Also, with continuing instability in our region we may find ourselves having to intervene and restore order in more countries (such as in Timor and Solomons).

Personally, I would like to see the defence budget doubled in the not so distance future. As the population ages and the workforce becomes tighter, I could also see the need for some sort of national service (eg. everyone aged between 17-26 must complete 1 year of military or public service).

Most of you probably don't agree but I thought I'd throw the question out there.
