Guys, even if you arent really interested in politics please have a say anyway... This is not really a flamey thread, so theres no probs if you arent right etc. I would want to hear what most Aussies opinions are, in fact people like you probably represent the majority of Aussie voters, so your opinion is actually pretty important.

One thing I've wondered is why the state and federal govts don't try too hard to nail the bikies.
There seems to be an unspoken agreement that if they don't shoot too many civilians they'll be left alone. People need to buy drugs apparently and better english speaking gangsters than the smart russians who would swamp the place and then be impenetrable if a space were made by closing the bikies down.

Just interested in hearing the history and opinions.

i think that as far as criminal gangs go bikies are pretty tame tbh

They are shifting colossal quantities of drugs around the place though.

I think there needs to be hard evidence. Anecdotal evidence won't do.
And I think if the police go around kicking over hornet's nests it'll make the problem worse. As long as they're only killing each other it doesn't really bother me.
They can make all the drugs in the world for all I care, it's not like they're going around forcing people to buy them.

I think one of the big issues here is that it is almost impossible to make bikie gangs ilegal. There are may bike clubs (like the ulysses club) that are only in it for the bikes. Are they illegal as well? Its a popular thing to try and ban bikie groups, but in practice how do you stop people riding motorbikes together and meeting to talk about bikes.
D'bert is right though, massive quantities of drugs are made and sold by these guys, but thats a different issue I guess.

Indeed, but again you need hard evidence to make a conviction, as with any criminal activity.

It's gotten to the stage where bikie gangs these days hire lawyers and PR consultants to improve their public image.

Yep, theres lots of money in drugs. Those charity bike rides that they do occasionally are just a big PR stunt I think.

look, drug problems in society are a darwinian process.

dont worry about them.

people that make the decision to take them and let them dominate their lives... naturally sink to the bottom of the pond.

if the bikie gang 'problem' in australia is as insular as you describe - then why does it matter? i think there's a pragmatic level of police-work being applied there; there's better crime to solve with more of a benefit to the public-at-large, turning a not-quite-blind-but-slightly-closed eye to this sort of lawbreaking is just strategic law enforcement, tbh.

Those charity bike rides they do are made by many, many bikers, majority of which have never been associated with bikees.

So, the Rudd master plan seems so be:

Kill Golden Goose.

NSW state Labor are gorn.

Federally Labor I think will still win the election. All the talk of the public "parking votes" with the Greens is total bullshit from the Libs. It's because of the ETS that they're voting Green.

And the media are drumming up all the Gillard for PM bs just to sell papers.

True but now there's not reason to get everything that needs to be legislated legislated. Don't open the door for some loon to kill this.

Tony Abbott was going to kill the NBN if he got in  ( from what I remember), maybe its one of the policies he made up on the spot. Like one of Howards "non core promises".

I believe the phrase is game on.

Labor factionalism, welcome back. We were wondering where you had gone for the last four years.

I still think the only reason Rudd has lost support, is his backflip on the ETS.

All he had to do was agree with some of the Greens terms and it would have been passed. Or he could have called a double dissolution.

Sigh. Stupid factional leaders.

Yah. That, and insulation, and mining tax, and looking like a bit of an aloof arrogant dick in the last two months, has led to a rather alarming slide.

This will go badly for labor unless they can get rid of the PM. If they dont, then there will be a constant cloud over his head. Getting Julia Gillard as leader will shore up a great proportion of the female vote. I dont think the Greens were a part of Labor not getting the ETS passed. It was a hostile senate that killed it initially.  After that Rudd should have had some backbone and pulled the trigger for the Double dissolution. He seems too cautious, and as a result the perception is that nothing gets done.
