In a landmass the size of America, with a population less than a 10th the size only the public sector can produce significant infrastructure works.
Who built your freeways Jay?

In fact the problem we're talking about here IS that the freemarket data network is utterly inadequate for even govt use, and the telcos are unwilling to spend a cent on it especially in rural areas, left to the freemarket 99% of the land area would today not have access to telegraphs, let alone phones. - but you'd know that if you knew anything about the subject.

NBN didn't nationalize anything.

to be honest on the whole NBN debacle, I still don't understand why they didn't use existing telstra/optus pipes/pits in the first place and had NBN Co dig up a brand new set of pits for absolutely no reason at all... the construction boom in sydney doesn't help bring down labour costs either. any time of infrastructure/construction work costs a pretty penny now.

They'd have satellite just like our rural areas.

yeah because a country like australia with a population of 22 million, even less so in rural areas have economies of scale for a private corporation to send a satellite for internet. yarp.

our NBN program does use satellite to cover rural areas btw. read the actual program.

Then the world could be like America.

Abbott in 2012 (Slipper misused $900 worth of travel entitlements):

'In court documents lodged yesterday, there are further serious allegations regarding potentially criminal misuse of taxpayer funds and breaches of entitlements.

"For any parliamentarian, let alone the Speaker, these would be very serious allegations.

"Against the Speaker, such allegations go to the integrity of the highest parliamentary office in the House of Representatives.

"While Mr Slipper is entitled to the presumption of innocence, these allegations unquestionably have the potential to damage the reputation of the office of Speaker and the standing of the Parliament.

"It is therefore incumbent on the Prime Minister, who used her numbers to install Mr Slipper as Speaker late last year, to require him to stand aside until these matters are concluded before the courts.

"The Australian Federal Police must immediately investigate these new allegations relating to criminal misuse of taxpayer funded entitlements.'

Abbott in 2015 (Bishop misused $5,000 worth of travel entitlements):

'I don't think it's appropriate to stand aside simply because the finance department might be having a look at something.'

Wow, it only took the Government two weeks to consider all 17,000 submissions on food labelling reform and come out with their new labels. That's got to be a record, especially as it was due late next month.

Couldn't have been an attempt to move attention away from Bronnie could it? (Yes. Yes it was.)

I wonder if Bronnie was just a little bit relieved when she heard Don Randall had died.

It wasn't $90k she spent looking for a job, it was $88k. Get it right, people! And it took her a whole fortnight too.

I could spend years in Europe with that much money, she lasted two weeks with a couple of hangers-on. Then again I suppose my need for limousine travel reduces my costs a little.

I must be tough getting chauffeured around in limos, taking first class flights and staying in five star hotels. Not to mention expensive dinners with expensive wine, and all paid for by the taxpayer whilst you are paid $340k per year on top of that. Poor thing.

If you're paid $340k a year then I'm pretty sure you can afford all that from your own pocket, not the tax payers.

They also reported during the mining boom that job creation from mining was 500,000 jobs. The actual figure was 46,000 with 20,000 tourism jobs lost, resulting in a net gain of 26,000 jobs.

Australian politics is weird. Also, someone needs to create a backing track for this.

I noticed it's still not Bronwyn's fault according to her and the PM.
