eh? english is an amalgamated language composed of all the people that settled here and made it their home. it is its own language. just because it has philological roots, doesn't mean it is 'indebted' to anglo-saxon, or norman french, or ancient latin. if you used that logic, every single civilization to ever arise from western europe would have its linguistic debts owed to india. that doesn't make sense; english is not comparable to indian.

however, you guys use our language wholesale. you haven't formed a new amalgamation using the native dialects and parlance of where you settled. you just use english: an international and exported version of it. and you bastardize it. ye sods.

I thought the would point out the facetiousness nicely, but I wasn't entirely kidding. Yes, you made it your own, but its roots are what they are, even if its structure is malleable, given time.

all western languages go back to indo-european roots. so all languages are defined as being sanskrit now? don't be stupid. it's not even the same thing as americans/aussies/canadians talking english. you talk an exact copy of the language. it hasn't progressed or evolved into a new 'language'. just idiomatic differences, local to region, and the pronunciation/enunciation differences that come with that. spoken american english is essentially no more different a variation of 'standard english' than is northern english, or cornish english, or whatever. pointing out that the english language formed 800 years ago from several comlpetely different languages clashing is inane. the closest analogy you have to that in north america is quebecois.

That's not what I said. I just think it's silly to criticize different English dialects for being different or changing, since English itself is a result of the evolution of human language. If you can be understood by the people you're trying to communicate with, it's all good. If that's not what you meant either, fine, but it's annoying seeing you resort to grade school insults every other post. It's more demeaning to you than anyone you attack.

Should try understanding a Liverpudlian or a Scot as an American. I understand Spanish better

1,000 days since Abbott has been on Q&A. If the guy can't face journalists in his own country he has no business 'leading' the nation as PM. He is a completely pathetic joke. Even his own daughter is quoted as saying he's a "lame churchy loser".

eh, tbh it's increasingly difficult to take q&a seriously. was great a few years back the questions that get selected nowadays are so inane and stupid that it's hard to even watch

I haven't watched it for ages but it's telling when the potential future PM can't even go near anything remotely resembling a confronting question. I guess he wants his answers to questions to be as scripted as possible so he's telling the "gospel" truth, unlike his faux pas with Kerry O'Brien a couple years back. That was pure embarrassment on his part.

Abbott is a terrible leader and should not even be in politics. Even leaders of minor parties of both sides front up to televised forums. Abbott is so lightweight a pre-schooler could out-debate him.

This isn't about parliament, but there have been a couple times where Abbott has literally ran out of the room as "protest" of a particular former party member's vote. He's desperate to run roughshod over the government and kow tows to to Gina Rinehart and Rupert Murdoch.

yes, the television question-show format or televised debate is 'lame' and 'mass cultural' and 'dumbed down', but you'd have to be obtuse to not recognize that modern-day politics is almost entirely mediated by... mass media. almost every average voter's experience and contact with politicians thesedays is through (tabloid) newspapers or televised debates/events. bbc question time is quite often a risible show, where little englanders show up to ask their neurotic and asinine middle-class questions, and it's easy and fine to be snobbish about it... but that is literally how most people receive their political fact and opinion. it is how most people engage with policy, and decide on the politicians whom will receive the vote.

i'd say it's pretty important that a politician shows up for question time on tv. plus then you get gems like this:

no because your democracy is bought and sold on capitol high by lobbyists and rich-people in backrooms.

the idea of a public forum for debate/policy-making/questioning is thoroughly socialist.

I'd say tomorrow marks his 1k Q&A absence.

Tony's strategy has been to avoid as much media as possible because he and the LNP knows that he simply does not hold up under scrutiny. That's why when he's not bike riding his campaign has been little more than brief appearances where the majority of the time Tony's in the background nodding and looking like he understands what's being said. When it's his turn to speak he parrots meaningless slogans like "Scrap the Carbon Tax" "Turn Back the Boats" and his latest, "A better deal for Australians," waves, refuses questions, and leaves.

Which Australians Tony? Which deal Tony? What makes it better Tony? Better than what Tony?

It is impossible to get a substantial answer out of him and if you try he either gets angry or completely shuts down. The only way he can function is if he's scripted and largely the media has been happy to grant him this - even the ABC for fear of being called biased.

He knows that he can't function at a more than superficial level, the LNP certainly knows it, so Q&A is completely off limits give its purpose is to be an unscripted environment where questions can be asked freely.

Thing is eventually he's going to have to take part in a leadership debate where he will have to answer quesions. Given that he has failed to work on this weakness, and in fact fled from it, I suspect he will be humiliated as he was last time. Whether it will matter or not, who knows.

I was being pre-emptive, because other than an utter miracle (and I don't follow any religion) Abbott was and will never appear on any program from now till the federal election where he could possibly be asked any question that hasn't been screened by Peta Credlin, which is by far more sheltering than Abbott's mother could possibly have provided during his years in primary school.

Loves Abbott's cartoonish "Little Book of Big Labor Waste" outlining things like advertising, staff payouts, market research, and travel expenses as examples of how the Labor Government is wasting taxpayer money. Of course when asked what he would do to change this he had to admit that the Coalition couldn't promise to cut any of this. Why? Well because they are all expenses associated with running a fucking Government. All Tony could really say is "well we won't spend as much on these things" despite the fact that he has no way of knowing what future expenses he'd face if in Government.

Meanwhile I have to wonder how much money he spent designing, printing, and distributing a little booklet that is actually without any value whatsoever.
