i'd had this in BF2-SF for Improv, just thought I'd add to regular bf2:

what if a commander had another asset- laser guided missile rfom some unseen plane, satellite, etc. The sniper class (or another class, just not ALL the classes) could have a laser pointer as part of their kit, and could paint a target for a missile strike. Maybe that missile could come from the US carriers on those kinda maps. It could even be from an f-15,etc., and the jets' gunner could launch the missile that was guided by the infantry. just thought  it would be a neat way to take out armor

...there already are laser guided missiles that are launched from F15s...?

also, wouldnt this kind of make anti-tank kits useless?  ive armor can be taken out at will be the commander, why is there a need for anti-tank?

it also takes away a lot of the power that tanks and APCs have.  i dont like it.

but it would be perfect to put through a window of a house to clear a floor so the infantry doesn't have to

As with all commaner assets, it would need recharging, thus allieviating the feeling of uselessness of being AT. as with most maps, there is more than one tank,APC, etc. so destroying one would still leave action for all you AT guys out there. The f-15 missile is different, in that it can be tedious to line up a shot, whereas a laser pointer gives the "fire and run" effect, as you, the pilot/gunner, need not worry about going in for another pass.

The whole "through the window" isn't bad at all- nice input.

What class should have this laser pointer?

Im thinking definitely sniper, MAYBE SpecOps

you know, to balance this why not give tanks a lazer detection system.  If a lazer sits on it for more than 5s it starts to sound.  Also, you could make it so that the lazer has to be on target the entire time or else the missle would "hit a hospital full of children or a bunker full of friendlies".

Good idea.

Snipers are one class who might use the Laser Designator, Spec Ops another. One problem is if, for example, it was part of a sniper/SF kit then too many people would start using those kits and the infantry war would pretty much suck.

First the 'release authority' would come from the commander. A LD user would request a laser guided missile target and the CO would accept just like arty, if it is available. Downside is commander's who suck will get TKed into dust if they are flying around and cant respond right away.

How about giving one or two Laser Designator packs to the Commander and he can issue it out to players just like dropping like a medic pack? This will reduce abuse and neglect of the kit. It would be added on to whatever kit the player is using already for maybe 3 missions only. Then it respawns with the Commander. To prevent whoring it can't be given to the same player twice in a row. Do not allow transfer or grab to elminate TKs. Just let it respawn with CO. And if a player TKs someone using it then they are blocked from using the LD next as if they had just used it.

Second idea is make a complete Forward Observer (FO) type kit that is not grabable by the other team and can be either selected or issued out by CO. *Not grabable because these would not be immediately interchangeable with different nations targeting systems.  If deployed as an FO kit it might also allow the user to call for special arty missions like smoke, scatterable mines and regular rounds. It could include counter-battery radar so when the enemy arty is about to fire the FO player could warn the team.

Using it to clear a bunker or building, AT and strategic asset destruction are all good uses. But it will be used to hit the middle of spawn points, landing support ships and anything else anyone can imagine so be forwarned - it might have your name on it, or mine  lol

I already suggested this idea a month ago. My idea was to have the LD as an item available only to snipers. The sniper 'paints' targets for the F-15/SU-30/SU-34 and this means that they can immediately fire on these targets. Another idea I had was for the lock on time to be increased for the laser missiles on the bombers, this would mean that targets would be difficult to hit unless painted by a sniper, thus increasing the usefulness of the LD and decreasing the overall power of the laser missiles (which can be too powerful sometimes) This whole idea would also mean that the laser guided bombs can be guided onto the enemies commander assets for an accurate strike. These 2 new improvements would make snipers vital on some maps, I feel that they are currently under-valued by the general BF2 community and maybe this would increase their usefulness.

This was done in the XBox version and it is a MAJOR pain in the ass.  You can't go 5 seconds in a tank without getting painted by a sniper and it completely ruins the game.

I hate Bf2 modern combat... the designator is horrible. You can lock on to anything and cant avoid it. It just makes everyone abuse the sniper class. Even without it the game would still suck....

well if you want the laser designator you should only be able to use it as long as you have the laser pointed on the target like in real life so you could avoid it if you destroyed the sniper or got in cover where they can't see you

great idea. except right now certain UAVs in iraq are equiped with hellfire missiles, suppose the UAVs could be armed and the commander has one hellfire shot every 1-2 UAV deploys

Yeh i think a tv guided missile would be better, a big red dot could b on the target and the commander has 2 guide it himself.
