Props to the police officer for acting within the letter and not being a prick.

I support this movement for a variety of reasons. Crime deterrent, political statement, et. al.

I will make sure I do not have any warrants before I give this a go.

Open carry is legal in the state of Virginia.  You don't see it much in Northern Virginia (thousands of liberals) but I've heard stories of people getting the police called on them for open carrying. Since it's usually someone saying "OMG THIS PERSON HAS A GUN" the officer has to respond, and then realizes it's just a law-abiding citizen and tells people to stop worrying.

Interesting. I can see a cop not knowing about this law and taking out a civy for it.

He wouldn't unless he's a shitty cop. Standard procedure would be to question the guy, and maybe arrest him if you're ignorant about the laws of the area you work in. After which he'll get released and you'll get yelled at by your supervisor for being a retard.

If someone open carrying is not posing a threat to anyone, an LEO can't open fire on him. If it's legal where he is then he can't even do shit about it, if it's illegal then he can arrest him.

So, you can carry a firearm openly, but only if it's not loaded? Sounds counter-productive.

Really, I think gun control in america needs to be more together. Probably starting with mandatory classes for anyone buying a gun, with periodical re-testing to make sure they'll at least HIT what they're shooting at.

It nothing more than a blunt object.  In the amount of time it would take to draw, load and fire -an assailent could easily cover 25 yards.   Bottom line is that the open carry law in Cali is all bling.

I'm from the States regulate school.  Keep the Feds out of it.  A Class and a permit are manditory in my State if you want to conceal carry.  Gun control laws are bullshit.  Criminals don't respect the laws currently on the books and more restrictions only hinder the law abiding citizen.

When they say not loaded, they mean nothing in the chamber or nothing in the magazine? The guy seemed like a bit of a dick from the comments, and the cop seemed a bit timid.

It means a semi-auto cannot have a round in the chamber.  In a revolver it can vary, but will mean nothing in the chamber next in line to the hammer (you would have to pull the trigger twice before it fires) and sometimes means the chamber under and next in line to the hammer.

No problem open carrying here. It's not as common as it used to be, since many carry concealed now, but you still see it. Carry fully loaded, spare mags, cocked and locked if you like. Cops don't give you any shit unless you are up to something.

California sucks.

walking around with an unloaded gun somehow is protecting your freedom.

Open carry laws are at the discretion of the state.  Utah has some of the most liberal gun laws in the country, including requirements to obtain a concealed carry permit; this is why many people that don't live in Utah actually apply for a concealed carry here.  However, open carry requires that no round be chambered.  They did recently update the law that allows a person to keep a concealed and loaded weapon in their car.

Actually it is. It's getting people used to seeing them and understanding they shouldn't be scared of them. Most people carrying openly are the "good guys". The more people that carry openly, the more common it becomes, the more people get used to it, the more people get comfortable with it, the less people complain. When you regularly see other people carry firearms it becomes normal and you don't think twice when you seem someone armed.

If enough people do it, it may make a difference and maybe they can get the law changed so they can actually carry it loaded.

Its legal to open carry in NC, since I have my concealed 99% of the time its covered but rare times I don't feel like searching for jac or w/e and I'll go inside a store with it in plain view

No-one cares ....... plus I look like a cop

no need to be a dick when the cop was being cool about it.  they could have found plenty of ways to mess with the guy if they wanted to be jerks.

The comments about not talking to the police and him trying to end the conversation made him come off as one of those "government is evil, the cops are going to take my guns away" types that think a gun equals automatic freedom and that walking around with it is supposed to keep the military and government in check.

Sorry, but I'd rather not be hasseled by anyone -let alone the police.  Maybe the man needed to be somewhere and didn't have time for pleasantries.  The cops really didn't have a reason to stop him either as open carry is legal.  How did you ascertain that he is one of those "government is blah" from the conversation?  He said to the police that he WASN'T associated with the group you just described.

I read a report the other day that said the majority of guns used against police officers were illegally acquired. Not at gun shows, not at gun shops, but illegally acquired.

Those testing the bounds of the law are taught how to deal with the police: never consent to a search. End the conversation asap and don't tell them anything the law doesn't require. A person not knowing their rights would submit when they do not have to.

he knew full well it was going to start something thats why he had the camera. and he was being a dick   not a total ass or anything but he could have just complied when the officer asked to inspect his gun as the officer was being really cool about it.   he is causing many headaches for local law enforcement dealing with worried citizens so he could back off a little on the rights stuff when the cop is clearly being cool about it and just wanting to make sure he was following the law 100%. if the cop was being a dick, then yeah by all means make him work for it.

when I get my carry license in Mn I will open carry some places. but I will also be prepared to be asked questions by police and comply to reasonable requests without being evasive about it.

I watched the video again and it looks to me like the mag was empty and it sounded pretty hollow (empty)  going back in.
